Max Russell Greenlee Jr.

Max Russell Greenlee, Jr. reposed in Our Lord on Holy Tuesday, April 15th, 2025 at 11:50 AM with family and friends at his bedside.
Max was born on February 1, 1929 to Dr. Max R. Sr. and Helen Lisle Greenlee in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1940, when Max R. Jr. was 11 years old, his parents moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa where Max Sr. established a medical practice with help from the local Urologist, George Clark. George and Betty Clark invited the family to attend St. James Episcopal Church. St. James is where Max Jr. met his future bride, Elizabeth ("Bebe") Clark. And there was a world of happy repercussions from the Clark/Greenlee alliance and the new religious adventure.
Max R. Jr.'s high school years were dominated by being a student in 6 different high schools due to his father's enlistment in the Navy and being transferred many times. But he did manage to graduate back at Oskaloosa HS in 1947. This was followed by two years at Grinnell College and a final two years at the University of Colorado in Boulder where he earned a Bachelor Degree in Chemistry.
Max then attended the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver. He married Bebe on June 30, 1953 and graduated medical school in 1955. He was a member of the medical honorary society AOA in his final year. After a one-year internship and a three-year residency in Dermatology, at the University of California Herbert C. Moffitt hospital in San Francisco, he moved to Boulder, Colorado to begin his practice at the Boulder Medical Center. He was Board Certified in his specialty in 1961. He served as Clinical instructor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine from 1963 – 1968 and Clinical Assistant Professor from 1968 until retirement.
Max had many hobbies and interests. A day did not often go by that he would not spend time playing the piano. He was excited to find new musical melodies his entire life. Another of his favorite activities was to organize backpacking excursions into the Rocky Mountains high country to explore seldom visited alpine lakes. His friends and colleagues and his family were all included in these adventures. The most remote lakes were his favorites and, of course, the ones that had native cutthroat trout in them. He much enjoyed birding, golf, skiing, sailing, ham radio and the many enjoyable outings in pickup and camper with Bebe, family and friends.
In the last few years, he always enjoyed outings to church on Sundays and wheelchair outings with his caregivers in and around his assisted living facility, weather permitting.
Max is particularly remembered for his gentle and friendly nature. He loved his family and friends, loved God, loved the Orthodox Christian faith and was devoted to the love of his life, Bebe.
Max is survived by his two children, Edith (Randy) Stout, Stephen (Nancy) Greenlee; four grandchildren, Jeffrey (Bekah) Stout, Abbie Stout, Andrew (Nancy) Greenlee and Sarah (Adam) Hardie; and seven great-grandchildren, Phoebe Stout, Ezekiel Stout, Lorenzo Stout, Helen Greenlee, Annabelle Greenlee, and Jack Hardie. Jack expects to have a new baby brother in May!
Max was predeceased by his wife Bebe Greenlee, parents Max Sr. and Helen Greenlee, in-laws George and Elizabeth ("Betty") Clark, brother Lorance Greenlee, sister-in-law Mary Ann ("Mimi") Barnhouse, and brothers-in-law Charles Barnhouse and Sam Clark.
A Funeral Mass will be offered for Max at St. Mark's Orthodox Church, 1405 S. Vine Street, Denver, Colorado on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at 9:00 AM. His burial will follow at the St. Laurence Cemetery, on the campus of the Our Lady and St. Laurence Benedictine Monastery, 4712 Cabin Creek Rd., Canon City, CO 81212.
