Obituary published on Legacy.com by Parker-Millard Funeral Service and Crematory on Jan. 19, 2026.
Maxine Regina Johnson, age 61, a cherished daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and faithful servant of God, transitioned on January 6, 2026.
She was born on October 31, 1964, in
Columbia, Missouri, to the late Frankie Lee and Allean Johnson. Maxine accepted Christ as her Savior early in life and carried her faith through every season. For more than 30 years, she remained a committed member of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended Bible study and shared kindness, wisdom, and compassion with those around her.
She was known for her captivating beauty both inside and out. Her gentle smile and joyful laughter could brighten any room. Her presence brought a quiet peace, a sense of comfort that lingered long after she left. She moved through life with grace, strength, kindness, and a selflessness that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her spirit radiated love, leaving behind memories of light, laughter, and the quiet power of a heart devoted to others.
Maxine spent most of her high school years at David Hickman High School before graduating from Douglass High School, Class of 1983. Education mattered deeply to her. She went on to earn a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Columbia College on July 25, 2002. Through persistence, focus, and determination she built a better life for herself and her children.
Family gave Maxine purpose. She was a devoted mother to her daughters, Mercedes and Lashonda Johnson, who held her heart. She encouraged, guided, and supported them with steady care into adulthood. Mother and daughter days were filled with laughter, honest talks, and close connection. She found comfort in simple joys and meaningful moments. Meals at Red Lobster and Kobe's created special memories. In recent months, she enjoyed a favorite treat from Starbucks, a Venti Iced Matcha Latte with vanilla cold foam; ohh, was she addicted!! She also found inspiration through uplifting podcasts and poetry that reflected her thoughtful and curious nature. Though she hoped to travel and see more of God's creation, His plan called her home.
During her time on Earth, Maxine left a lasting mark on her four precious grandchildren, Khivryn Long (16), Jacien Pittman (11), Jeuelz Johnson (7), and Jaais Johnson (4), who lovingly called her NeNe. She played an important role in their lives, offering guidance, care, and endless affection. Being their NeNe filled her heart with pleasure and there was nothing she would not do for her babies.
Her care reached beyond her household, On January 1, 2004, Maxine purchased her first home and opened both her doors and heart to foster children in the community. She provided stability, direction, and unconditional care. For more than 15 years, her home was a place of safety where young lives were nurtured and valued.
In her career, Ms. Maxine served the Columbia Public School District as a homeschool communicator and substitute teacher. She had a deep passion for working with children. Maxine stood up for students and families and offered help wherever needed. Her compassion and dedication touched many lives.
Maxine Regina Johnson will be remembered for her beauty, tender heart, bright smile, elegance, joyful laughter, and quiet strength. She lived with purpose, resolve, and faith. A true self starter, her drive was guided by love. Her spirit continues through her daughters, her grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know her. She gave freely, loved deeply, and stood firm for those she held close.
Maxine is survived by daughters Mercedes and Lashonda Johnson (Columbia), grandchildren Khivryn Long, Jacien Pittman, Jeuelz Johnson, and Jaais Johnson. Siblings; David Johnson (Carla), Ray Johnson, Michael Johnson, Frank Johnson (Jennie), Shelia Johnson (Earl) and host of nieces and nephews. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents Frankie and Allean Johnson, niece Sha'kara Hayes and nephew Douglas Johnson. She also leaves extended relatives, dear friends, former foster children, and many in the community who felt her warmth and care. Though she is deeply missed, we find peace in knowing she now rests in God's presence.
