Maxine Schoel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Anderson Funeral Home - Marshalltown Chapel on Feb. 21, 2026.
Maxine Schoel, 98, formerly of Gladbrook, Iowa, died peacefully on Friday, February 20, 2026, at Homestead of Olathe Memory Care in Olathe, Kansas. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Anderson Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com

Born on November 26, 1927, she was the daughter of Ray and Minnie (Dahms) Hooper. She graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1944 and was united in marriage to Cleon Schoel on May 21, 1949. They made their home in Gladbrook, where they raised their three daughters. Maxine worked as an accountant/office manager at the local grain elevator/bean mill until 1988. She then attended Marshalltown Community College and earned her Associate Degree in Computer Science. She finished her career at Gethmann Construction in 1992.

Maxine was an active and valued contributor to her community. She was a member of the Gladbrook Methodist Church (serving on the Administrative Board, as a Sunday school teacher, and UMW), American Legion Auxiliary, Gladbrook Library Board, Kid's Club, and Order of the Eastern Star. Many will remember her as "Grandma Max," as she read to students at the elementary school every week for many years.

Cherishing her memory are her three daughters: Terry (Stan) Shogren of Bossier City, LA, Jean (Orv) Nouska of Chaska, MN, and Lynn (Dallas) Adelmund of Lenexa, KS; brother George Hooper of Conrad, sisters Phyllis Moeller of Conrad, and Doris Chabal of Grundy Center; grandchildren Rodney Shogren, Raymond Shogren, Richard Shogren, Molly Nouska, Teagan Nouska, Darcy (David Kendrick) Adelmund, and Riley Adelmund; as well as many nieces, nephews, and life-long friends.

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jim Hooper; sister, Lois Dierks; and infant son, Nile Richard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Gladbrook Methodist Church or Gladbrook Library.
