Mela Lucero (78) of
San Antonio, New Mexico sadly passed away on Sunday, February 5, 2023, in
Albuquerque, New Mexico after a difficult battle with cancer. She was born in
Socorro, New Mexico on August 18, 1944, to Luciano and Juanita (Tarin) Guiterrez. Mela lived most of her life in Socorro where she was well known and loved for who she was. Mela's love transformed the lives of everyone she encountered. She was a devoted member of the catholic church, where she attend mass regularly, prayed every chance she could, and truly felt, in her heart, that God was with her through every step of her life. She loved spending time with her husband, children, grandchildren, and entire family and would never miss an opportunity to do so. She enjoyed going to the casino, dancing, and listening to music, with her favorites being 50's rock-n-roll and Spanish New Mexican music (Al Hurricane was her favorite).
Mela is proceeded in death by her parents, brothers Greg Gutierrez, Tony Gutierrez, Luciano "Slim" Gutierrez, and her 2 sisters-in-law: Mary Jane and Barbara Gutierrez. Mela is survived by her husband of 61 years, Leandro Lucero of San Antonio and her 4 children; Frances Lucero and her husband, Tommy, of El Rancho; Michael Lucero and his wife, Linda, of Lemitar; Jeanette Guerrero, of Albuquerque; and Matthew Lucero, of Socorro. She leaves behind her grandchildren Anthony Sanchez of San Antonio; Antoinette Wheeler and her husband, Brian, of Socorro; Kimberly Lozoya and her husband, Eric, of Las Cruces; Jason Lucero and his wife, Andrea, of Polvadera; Christopher Lucero and his wife, Michelle, of Polvadera; Kyle Lucero and his wife, Mika, of Tularosa; Melissa Baca and her husband, Ronny, of Albuquerque; Madeline Hernandez and her husband, Manuel, of Albuquerque; Alisha Guerrero of Albuquerque; Antonio Guerrero and his wife, Bea, of Albuquerque; Bernadette Lucero of Socorro; 31 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Joe Gutierrez of Albuquerque; Ricky Gutierrez and his wife, Grace, of Socorro; sisters-in-law Ernie Gutierrez of Socorro; Corine Torres of Socorro; Arsenia Romero of Socorro and brother-in-law Joe Lucero of El Rancho. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends who will sadly miss her. A Rosary will be recited on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 9:30 AM, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at San Miguel Mission Church, 403 El Camino Real St.,
Socorro, New Mexico, with Father John Anasiuda officiating. Burial inurnment will follow after the funeral mass at the San Miguel Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pall bearers will be Antonio Guerrero, Christopher Lucero, Christian Wheeler, and Logan Sanchez. Honorary pall bearers are Andrew Lujan, Fabian Lozoya, and Joshua Vallejos. Mela's family would like to thank Dr. Kumar, Dr. Strader, and Dr. Muller, along with their nurses and staff, at UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, for providing excellent medical and physical care. The family would also like to express their deepest gratitude to the doctors and nurses in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at UNM Hospital, for their unending service and care they provided during the last days of Mela's life. A special heart filled THANK YOU to Father Stephen C. Schultz, of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Albuquerque, who visited the hospital after the passing of Mela to pray for her soul and comfort the family
