Mrs. Melanie Dickens Chambers, age 65, lost her battle to cancer on October 25, 2024. Melanie was born on March 17, 1959, in Thomaston, Georgia to J.D. and Edna Dickens. After graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1977, she attended Gordon Jr College then went on to study education at Georgia Southwestern State University. After graduating with a degree in education, Melanie began her career as a beloved teacher to children in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, then returned home and retired in Georgia.
Melanie married the love of her life, Michael Chambers, in 1979 in Thomaston. They went on to have 2 children, Matt and Megan. In 2019, Melanie retired after teaching for 43 years. She spent her time doting on her 2 granddaughters, Lily and Celia, and traveling with Mike. Their final travel adventure together was a cross-country trip in Canada in June that she planned for 2 years. She found great joy in planning very detailed travel plans.
Melanie was preceded in death by her parents, J.D. and Edna Dickens. She is survived by her husband, Mike Chambers,, children Matt (Sabrina) Chambers and Megan (Grant) Crago, her granddaughters Lily Chambers and Celia Crago, her sister Rhonda (Billy) Bankston, her niece Leah (Jeff) Banford, and her two dogs, Maggie Mae Sugarbarker and Dixie Bell Sugarbarker.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 27, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home. Rev. Joey Smith will officiate, and interment will follow at South View Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour at Fletcher-Day Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meansville Baptist Church where she was the Choir Director for 14 years.
