Melanie Elaine Hawthorne, 68, of Hutchinson, died January 2, 2023, at her home. She was born February 15, 1954, in Sublette, to Daniel and Ruby (Harms) Schmidt.
Melanie graduated from Ulysses High School, attended John Brown University, and received her Associate Degree from Hutchinson Community College. She worked as a paraprofessional at Nickerson USD 309 for many years and volunteered as a teacher's aide at Central Christian Schools. Melanie was known for her hospitality and warm spirit. She was a member of Medora Community Bible Church and loved playing the organ and piano for church events.
On February 23, 1980, Melanie married David G. Hawthorne at Ebenfeld Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro. He survives.
Also surviving are: her sons, Curtis Hawthorne (Sarah) of Sunnyvale, CA, Craig Hawthorne of Tucson, AZ; grandsons, Levi and Isaac; and brother, Garvie Schmidt (Diane) of Hillsboro.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2023, at Medora Community Bible Church, 8311 N. Medora Road. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, with the family present to receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Elliott Mortuary.
Memorials may be made to Medora Community Bible Church Missions, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
