It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Melba Showah Bowman. Melba died peacefully in her home in Ridgeland, Mississippi, on October 21, 2025.
Melba was born in Bastrop, Louisiana, in 1941, the first of five children born to John Showah, an immigrant from Lebanon, and Gertrude Showah (née Josey). Gertrude also had two daughters from a previous marriage, Faye Shepherd and Thelma "Sister" Fedell, who further enriched the family circle. The family later made their home in Hollandale, Mississippi, where they enjoyed a full and vibrant life in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Melba attended public school in Hollandale and went on to pursue higher education, ultimately earning a master's degree in English.
On October 22, 1977, in Jackson, she married Stanford "Chip" Bowman in a ceremony at St James Episcopal Church.
Melba and Chip had a relationship like no other. They were the epitome of "opposites attract" but bound together by a love for each other that some of us only hope for in life. A profound connection that created the perfect balance; two parts of a whole that pushed the other to be a better person. Their life together was nothing less than fascinating. Their initial project was to publish a book of photography titled, MISSISSIPPI IMAGES UNLIMITED. An intimate yet beautiful collection of images taken from all over Mississippi which ultimately became a love letter to the state. She and Chip devoted their lives to philanthropy to better the lives of everyone. From The Community of the Cross of Nails to The Fondren Renaissance Foundation, they wanted their lives to mean something for the service of others and for their cherished community.
Melba was truly in a class of her own. At her core, she believed deeply that all people are equal and deserve love. A lifelong learner, she read constantly seeking out new knowledge and perspectives with an open and curious mind. Her interests were wide-ranging, including gardening, community service, philanthropy, and her cherished Dream Group. Melba devoted countless hours to volunteer work, always offering her time and talents to help others.
She was a woman of deep faith and an active member of St. James' Church, where she served faithfully on the Vestry and the Flower Guild. Everything she undertook was done with her characteristic sophistication, grace, and generosity of spirit.
Melba was preceded in death by her parents, John and Gertrude Showah; her beloved husband, Chip Bowman; her brother, Mike Showah; and her sisters, Thelma Fedell and Faye Shepherd.
She is survived by her son, Karl Mann; her sister, Linda Grace; and her brothers, Joe and George Showah with their respective wives Linda and Sandy. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who brought great joy to her life, including Winston and Avery Jenkins; Jeff and Justin Showah; Hayse Grace; Erin and Tony Showah; Jason Showah and Mandy Matlock; Rusty and Terry Shepherd, Barbara Liggett and Cynthia Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon, Wednesday, October 29, at St. James' Episcopal Church, 3921 Oakridge Dr, Jackson. Visitation at 11:00 a.m. before the service at The Oakridge Building.
