Melba “Joy” Chambers, 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Anderson, Texas on February 25, 2026. She was born on December 29, 1936, in Cameron, Texas to the parents of Clarence and Mary Morgan.
Joy moved to Houston at an early age and attended Jeff Davis High School where she met the love of her life Jesse “Bud” Chambers. They were married on August 25, 1955, and raised two girls on the North side of Houston. Joy knew nothing but hard work from an early age when she started off managing a salon at Foley’s. She then went to work in the banking industry at Bank of Harris County as a teller where she found her calling in the financial world. She served in multiple capacities within the bank but always stayed loyal to her customers. Many of whom traveled the world and would bring her treasures that she shared with her loved ones. Some of these customers even stayed with her through the changes of ownership from OmniBank then later on to Bank of Ozark’s. Due to her dedication and love for her job, Joy did not retire until she was 80 years old.
Retirement allowed her to shift her focus on to her road trips with her sister-in-law Ruby where they would take off and find themselves on the back roads of east Texas headed to Louisiana to see her other sister-in-law, Mildred. Louisiana was a favorite destination for multiple reasons, and you could oftentimes find her in her favorite seat at the Coushatta Casino playing the slot machines.
In her final years, she moved to Anderson to live with her granddaughter where she was able to watch the cows and enjoy her coffee while reading her WWII romance novels or working on word searches. Her last vacation was with the family to Branson, Missouri where she was able to visit a casino along the way and a wax museum where she posed with her favorite, Willie Nelson, and others.
Joy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jesse Roy Chambers; her parents, Clarence and Mary Morgan; and siblings, Thora “Doris” and husband Phillip Tilotta; Harry Melton Morgan and wife Carolyn Delores; Clarence Ira Morgan and wife Ida; Wand Ella and husband Monty Hamblin., Father and Mother-in-law Robert “Bob” and Elsie Pauline Chambers; Sister-in-laws Ruby Carl and husband Oscar Riggs; and Mildred Louise and husband Carl Vickers; and great grandson Wyatt Jace Nicholds.
Joy is survived by her daughters Robin Nicholds and husband David of Kingwood, Tx; Raye Chambers of Tomball, Tx; her grandchildren Jessica McClosky and husband John of Anderson, Texas and David “DJ” Nicholds, JR and wife Kalee of Kingwood, Tx; her great-grandchildren Kailey Gambill and husband Jared, Brenden “Luke" McClosky and fiancé Sofia Schutmaat, Jackson McClosky, Conner Seigle, David “Trey” Nicholds, III, Addison Nicholds, and Colten McClosky; her great-great grandchildren Brylee Sanders and Bexlee Gambill; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm March 21, 2026, in Anderson, Texas.
