Melda Jean Ling

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Melda Jean Ling, 89, of Hurley, VA on October 18, 2025, following an extended illness. Born in Wheelright, KY on July 30, 1936, to Janie Hurley Akers and William Clay Akers.
Melda was the wife of the late William F. Ling II, with whom she shared 72 years of love and companionship.
She was preceded in death by her husband, as well as her sons, Danny Arthur Ling, Leslie Scott Ling, and Donald Ray Ling. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Marylou Akers and Joanne Akers Massey, as well as several grandchildren.
Melda leaves behind her cherished children: Ava Diane Justus, William Mike Ling (Helen), Terry Wayne Daniels, Jimmy Dean Ling (Chris Ling), and Susan Rena Billings (Barry) and a sister, Marlene Cochran.
She was a proud and caring grandmother and great-grandmother to many.
She is also survived by many extended family members, including a niece and nephews, with whom she maintained a close and caring relationship.
A dedicated and compassionate nurse, Melda pursued her calling in 1978 and spent many years serving others with kindness and devotion.
She was a woman of determination, who approached every challenge with grace and independence. Melda was always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need, no matter her own circumstances, embodying true selflessness.
She was also a talented seamstress. She loved her yard and flowers, time spent with good friends, the beach, and traveling whenever she was able to do so.
A celebration of life and visitation service will be conducted at Grundy Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 22nd at 6:00 PM with the funeral service on Thursday, October 23rd at 1:00 PM. Jim Belcher will be officiating the service.
The burial will be the following day at Charles Cemetery in Hurley VA. Jimmy Ling will be officiating at the burial.
Active Pallbearers will be family and friends who were blessed to know Melda.
Melda's love for her family and friends will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. As we say goodbye, we find comfort in the words of John 14:1-3:
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me." In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
