Mr. Melvin Donald "Don" Burt, age 90, of Hoschton, formerly of Gainesville passed away Monday, October 13, 2025 at his residence, surrounded by family.
Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 17, 2025 in the Chapel of Memorial Park South Funeral Home with interment following at Memorial Park South Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Thursday, October 16, 2025 at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.
Mr. Burt was born to the late J.C. & Ruby Stephens Burt, Sr. in Dawsonville. Don graduated from Dawson County High School at age 15 as the Valedictorian, then went on to graduate from The University of Georgia with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and his Masters and Specialist degrees in Counseling. He later earned a Doctorate in Adult Education from Georgia State University, where he received recognition for his outstanding dissertation. Throughout his life he was a devoted Georgia Bulldog.
Don began his career as a teacher and counselor at Dawson County High School and went on to become the Principal. He then moved to Gwinnett County, where he served in many capacities as principal of Duluth Middle School, Assistant Personnel Director, Teacher Trainer, and Administrator at Gwinnett Technical College. He retired from education in 1990 after 33 years.
During his professional career he served as President of both Dawson County and Gwinnett County Education Association and serviced on the Board of the Georgia Association of Educators.
Upon retirement, Don began a second career as a Professional Residential Real Estate Agent for 26 years with Buckhead Brokers, Coldwell Banker and Norton Agency.
He was a devoted Christian and family man and lived his 90 years in Dawson, Gwinnett and Hall Counties.
Mr. Burt is survived by his sons & daughters-in-law, Todd & Joli Burt of Lithia, Florida and Trent & Suzanne Burt of Gulf Breeze, Florida; son, Travis Burt of Hoschton; 6 grandchildren, Lester, Connor, Avery, Chandler, Gavin and Logan; great-grandchildren, Leah and Lucas; and several nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Morris Burt; son, Victor Burt; parents; and brother, J.C. Burt, Jr.
