Melvin "Mel" Wesley Callahan, 80, of Jefferson City, Missouri, passed away Friday, November 24, 2023. He was born on February 21, 1943. On March 1, 1964, he was united in marriage to Rose Alice Manley at First Baptist Church in Jefferson City. She preceded him in death on February 9, 2020. Mel was married to Thelma Jean "Jeannie" Bias Redmon on January 22, 2022; she preceded him in death on November 12, 2023.
Mel was a 1961 graduate of Sullivan High School in Sullivan, Missouri. He was hired by the Missouri Baptist Convention Press. Mel proudly served in the United States Army after voluntarily enlisting in 1966 and was honorably discharged in January 1970, achieving the rank of sergeant. Mel returned to work at the Missouri Baptist Convention Press and went on to join a local carpenters union from which he retired. He also served as the department chaplain for the Cole County Fire Protection District. Mel was currently serving as the lead pastor at First Baptist Church in St. Elizabeth.
Mel dedicated his life to serving the Lord and spreading the love of God. He and his wife, Rose, traveled the country together sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. He was a longtime member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Some of his involvements include aiding in prison ministries, being a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association (CMA), assisting in disaster relief when needed, and serving on the board for the Helping Hands Food Pantry in St. Elizabeth. Mel made a huge impact on the world around him and his love and kindness will be remembered in the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who know and love him.
Friends will be received from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 1, 2023 at Houser-Millard Funeral Directors. A Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Bro. Alan Earls officiating. Internment will be private.
