Melvin Raymond Cooke, 84, of Elm City, passed away Sunday. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, 2022, at Joyner's Funeral Home, 4100 Raleigh Road Parkway, Wilson. Rev. Barry Drum will officiate. Interment will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Elm City.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. at Joyner's Funeral Home.

Melvin was a loving Father and Husband and enjoyed spending much of his time with his family. He loved collecting antiques, he spent many days going to flea markets and traveling from state to state in search of the perfect piece. He was the owner of Antique World for fifty years where he ran auctions and his shop. Melvin was also a very active member of the town he called home his entire life, including being a Town Commissioner for twenty-three years and being very instrumental in getting the depot for Elm City and starting the Elm City Museum. He was also the Vice President of the Wilson Jaycees. Melvin loved the Lord and was a member of Elm City Baptist Church, however he attended Elm City Methodist Church and dearly loved going to Church there.

Melvin is survived by his loving wife, Jean Cooke; daughter, Jennifer Holtzleicer and husband, Todd of San Diego, California; stepdaughter, Shannon Hopper of Sarasota Florida; grandsons, Tre Morgan, Dru Morgan, Garrett Hopper, Dalton Hopper; granddaughter, Alexis Morgan; sister, Bert Proctor of Abingdon, Virginia; seven nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Luby and Maggie Cooke; sisters, Mamie Flora, Marjorie Barnes, Louise Carter, Penny Miller, Doris Owens; brothers, Roy Cooke, Staton Cooke, L.T. Cooke and Coy Cooke.
