Melvin “Mel” Evans, Jr., of Odenton, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on October 31, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on June 19, 1946, in Maryland to the late Melvin Sr. and Leona Evans, Mel made Odenton his home for the past 53 years. Sixty-three years ago, he met the love of his life, Bonny (née Russell), when the two went on a date with friends to the drive-in. That chance evening marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with laughter, music, and adventure.
A proud member of Steamfitters Local Union #486, Mel completed a five-year apprenticeship before becoming a licensed steamfitter. He went on to work in HVAC for another 48 years — a career he truly loved. His dedication, skill, and work ethic earned him the respect of his colleagues and community alike.
Outside of work, Mel enjoyed life to the fullest. He was an avid fan of golf and had a special fondness for assembling 1,000-piece puzzles. Though it sometimes tested Bonny’s patience, Mel loved bluegrass music and was rarely seen without his Bose speaker playing his favorite tunes. Together, Mel and Bonny shared a love of country dancing over the years, even winning a dance contest. Mel’s adventurous spirit led him to travel extensively across the United States and Canada — often planning trips himself or suggesting spontaneous getaways. Above all, Mel cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the anchor of his life.
Mel is survived by his devoted wife, Bonny Evans; his children, Mary Jane Robinson, Cheryl Lynn Mayo, and Stacy Leigh Bishop; and his beloved grandchildren, Alexxis M. Bishop, Emalie M. Mayo, Richard L. Robinson IV, Austen W. Bishop, Meghan E. Mayo, Ashlyn N. Bishop, and Alexzandra R. Bishop. He was predeceased by his brother, Roger W. Evans.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mel’s name may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake, whose compassionate care brought great comfort to him and his family.
