Melvin Hellem Obituary

Melvin Roy Hellem Jr, 51, of New Baltimore, Michigan, beloved husband of Heather (Ross) Hellem and loving father to Henrik & Kaia, passed away unexpectedly on October 31st, 2025.

He was born on November 14th, 1973, in Staten Island, New York to Melvin & Amelia Hellem, who currently reside in New Jersey. He is survived by his sister Laura (Charles) Librizzi, nephew Thomas and nieces Katie and Victoria.

Growing up in NYC, Mel was part of a loving household and was taught early on the qualities of kindness, loyalty, leadership and service. Mel embraced and lived by these early concepts, ultimately earning him the title of Eagle Scout, completing many service projects that benefited his community. Mel later attended Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania and completed his degree in Political Science while also serving as a member of the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. His love of service, leadership and being a "brother to all" went well beyond college and graduation as he continued to serve in many roles for several years, gaining lifelong friends and leading him to his wife, Heather.

Mel and Heather were married in Michigan on October 10th, 2009. They recently celebrated their 16th wedding anniversary together. While living in New Jersey, they welcomed their son, Henrik, and began building a family full of love and laughter. He spent time working as an office administrator for many years at Fox Rothchild in NJ before moving to his wife's home state of Michigan. Shortly after, they welcomed their daughter, Kaia, and completed their family. As a father, Mel loved watching his children do what they loved, playing games together and sharing his passion for history and sports with his kids. He continued to work as an office administrator with Partyka & Company, PC in Warren while being an active father at home. Mel enjoyed helping coach Kaia's t-ball team and most recently, Henrik's hockey team.

Mel was a lifetime New York sports fan, loving the Mets, Giants and of course, the New York Rangers. As a season ticket holder for many years, he enjoyed attending games with family and friends and passed his love of hockey down to his children. Watching games, and coaching and teaching them about his favorite hockey players, was his true love in life. Many of Mel's favorite players were goalies, but none more beloved than his son, Henrik.

Mel will forever be remembered as a dedicated family man and friend that cherished the relationships he built across the country. He could talk to anyone with ease and would graciously be a listening ear to anyone that needed it – if it was over a bourbon and a bonfire, he was even happier to oblige. His family was his world and while they will miss his presence, they know that as an Eagle Scout, he will forever fly among the stars.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the family.
