Melvin Lavelle Key, 71, passed away on February 18, 2026. He was born on October 3, 1954, in
Greensboro, North Carolina, and was a lifelong resident of North Carolina, raised and rooted in Greensboro.
Melvin was a lifelong Christian who deeply loved God and spent much of his life studying and reflecting on scripture. He loved Southern gospel music, had a beautiful singing voice, and sang in the church choir for many years.
He often described himself as a "Country Boy." He enjoyed country cooking and desserts, planting flowers, and growing tomatoes. He loved the beach and fishing - both off the pier and in local farm ponds.
Melvin had a strong interest in history and a talent for fixing, refinishing, and restoring antiques. Just months before his passing, he was proudly working on restoring Victrola and Edison record players. While he joked that he could not figure out how to send an email, he could certainly repair antique motors and restore old furniture to beautiful condition. He also restored wooden antique boxes to give as gifts to family members.
He was known for his sense of humor and love of telling jokes, even managing to share "dad jokes" from the ICU, winning over doctors and nurses alike. He lived with a humble and open heart, cared deeply for others, and loved his family very much. He was a hard worker and was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Melvin spent most of his career working for Procter & Gamble / Richardson-Vicks. He later started a handyman business and continued working in facilities maintenance until his retirement.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raleigh Melvin Key, and his mother, Jeanette Key.
He is survived by:
His daughter, Andria Key, and her son, Vincent
