Obituary of Melvin Lawrence Raven
Melvin Lawrence Raven, 88, passed away on April 29, 2024, as the result of an accident.
He was born in Knox on October 15, 1935, to Lawrence and Lillian (Stevens) Raven. Before the age of three, Melvin lost his mother in a car accident. He and his brother and sister lived with their grandparents for a handful of years following her death.
Melvin attended school in Knox and graduated from Freedom Academy in 1955. After high school he joined the Army and spent most of the following three years in Germany. After leaving the military, Melvin moved to Massachusetts where he worked for Whiting Milk Co. While in Massachusetts, Melvin met and married his wife Carol Moulton in 1959. In 1970, they purchased a chicken farm in Appleton, Maine, which later became a dairy farm. He was a member and past president ('73 - '75) of the Appleton Community Club. Melvin spent 15 years coaching Little League and was the past president of Freedom Academy Alumni. In his free time, Melvin enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as watching basketball and baseball.
He was predeceased by his parents and stepmother Beatrice (Suitor) Raven; infant brother Raymond Earl Raven; sister Janice (Raven) Gardner; and brother Robert Raven; sisters-in-law Judy (Ward) Raven, Sandrea (Seibed) Raven and brother-in-law Joel Gardner.
Melvin is survived by brothers Algene (Ike) Raven of Palermo, Arnold (Chet) Raven of Thorndike, Roger Raven and wife Joan of Knox and sisters Barbara Raven and Myrna Raven both of Unity; daughters Theresa Raven of Jefferson, Laurie Raven of Appleton, son Stuart Raven and wife Karen of Waldo and Florida; grandchildren Victor Harvey Goff IV, Li Goff and Maria Goff, Allie-Marie Raven and wife Chelsey Gomez, Michelle DeLuca and husband Daniel, and great-grandson Owen DeLuca.
