Melvin J. Schiebel, age 93, of Romeo, Arizona, and a longtime resident of Ray township, passed away on Tuesday February 10, 2026 at Angelic Gardens of Attica. Mel was born January 11, 1933 in Ray Township, the son of Charles & Laura (Stolzenfeldt) Schiebel. After working in Rochester Michigan for a short time and belonging to its Fire Department, and for a short time as a police officer in Avon Twp., he moved to Ray Township and saw there was a need for a Fire Department that it didn’t have at that time. In the early 1970’s, the department was started and for 15 years he was the Chief. While being Chief, he was also selling Real Estate and selling insurance for Metropolitan Life insurance company out of “Kraft & Associates”, his office in Shelby Township. He retired from being Chief and selling insurance in the early 1990’s, and moved to Arizona where he could be seen playing senior baseball for many years, playing tournaments all over the USA and even in Germany. He was also on many bowling leagues and enjoyed deer hunting.
Mel is survived by his 3 children: Daryl (Alice) Schiebel of Armada, Diane Dzuris of North Branch, and Denise Secson of Lum. Grandchildren include Sarah & George Hebb, Beth Schiebel, Jessica & Michael Gregg, Robert & Rebecca Schiebel, Scott and Alexandra Dzuris and Jill & Brian Bahrke. Also survived by 15 great grandchildren & niece Charlotte Mankowski. Mel was preceded in death by his son Dale, sister Lorraine Behnke, son-In-laws Dennis Dzuris, & Larry Secson, along with Marlene Schiebel, the mother of his children.
Funeral services will take place on Monday, February 16 at 11 AM at the Romeo United Methodist Church with Pastor Devin Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 10 AM till the service starts at 11 AM, all at the Church. After a funeral luncheon at the Church, Mel will be buried by his parents at the Davis Cemetery in Ray, Michigan.
