Melvin Schultz Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rentschler Family Mortuaries - Rodrick-Minear Lucas Chapel on Mar. 20, 2026.
On March 17, 2026 Melvin K. Schultz left his earthly home for the land of lush green grass and cool clear water where his favorite horses were waiting for his arrival. He was born April 10, 1940, to Andrew and Rozena (Brack) Schultz of Delhi Township, Osborne County, Kansas. He always said when his life ended he wanted to be living in the same house in which he was born and the Good Lord granted that wish.

Melvin attended Greenview country school and later graduated from Lucas High School in 1958. The learning for his lifetime career as a farmer/ rancher began early. As a youngster he fed cows, hauled bales, cut wheat and, much as he hated to admit it, fed hogs and a few sheep. He was proud to pass his strong work ethic down to his children and grandchildren.

A blind date arranged by good friends introduced Melvin to Carolyn Finkenbinder of Waldo. The couple dated for over a year and were married July 30, 1961. Their first home was a small rental farm west of Lucas. This is where they raised their three children: Brian Scott, Brenda Jo, and Mark Andrew. In 1988 Melvin moved to the farmstead that was the place of his birth and there he lived the rest of his life.

Even though Melvin claimed to be retired he still enjoyed tending to cattle and horses and helping his sons wherever and whenever he could.

In 1954 he was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Wilson and later transferred his church membership to the Methodist church in Lucas. Melvin was also a member of the National Rifle Association, American Quarter Horse Association, Foundation Quarter Horse Registry and serves as treasurer for Delhi Township in Osborne County.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother; Richard, Sisters; Mavis Allison and Carol Seirer, two nephews and a niece.

His surviving family includes his wife, Carolyn; sons Brian (Judy) Schultz, rural Lucas and Mark (BJ) Schultz, Luray; daughter Brenda Jo Schultz of Beloit, Kansas; four grandchildren: Andrew (Brandice) Schultz, Nowata, Oklahoma, Braden Schultz, Great Bend, Kansas; Benjamin Schultz and Sydney Schultz, Luray; step- grandchildren Alicia (Jaden) Flower and Austin (Taylor) Thomson and seven great- grandchildren.
