Melvin Zollman Obituary

Visit the Grayson Funeral Home - Charlestown website to view the full obituary.

Melvin R. Zollman, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away on November 19, 2025, at his residence in Charlestown, Indiana, surrounded by his family. He was born on February 17, 1946, delivered at home by his father during a significant snowstorm that prevented the mid-wife from arriving.

Melvin dedicated 20 years of his career working at the Cummings Engine Plant, a testament to his hard work and commitment. He also served his country honorably as a retired Sergeant First Class in the United States Army. During his service, he earned numerous honors, including three Army Commendation Medals, five Achievement Medals, six Good Conduct Medals, two National Defense Service Medals, a Southwest Asia Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and two Armed Forces Reserve Medals with Device.

Those who knew Melvin can attest to his genuine spirit and love for life. He was a true cowboy and horseman, demonstrating his passion through various equestrian activities. Notably, he placed second in the world at the Pole Bending event at the Appaloosa Stake Race. Melvin's love for horses extended to his life membership with the Appaloosa Horse Club in Moscow, Idaho.

A great mentor to many children, Melvin's influence extended beyond his immediate family as he dedicated time to the Clark County 4-H Club, nurturing the interests and talents of young aspiring individuals. This passion led to his role as a founder of the Southern Indiana Rabbit Breeders Association. He enjoyed barrel racing, cheering on the Yankees, and spending his evenings watching classic shows like Gunsmoke and MASH.

Melvin is survived by his cherished wife, Donna Rahe Chandler Zollman, of over 50 years; his nephew Robert Jenkins (Dawn), great nieces Ellie and Maddie, daughter, Kimberly Higdon; granddaughter, Cassey Youngblood (Zayrin); his great-grandchildren, Zaythian and Zeelyxx. He will also be remembered by his siblings, Don Zollman (Bev), Herman Zollman (Linda), Janet Jenkins, and Wayne Zollman along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Leona Zollman, and siblings Catherine Baxter,  Bud Zollman, Glen Zollman, Charles Zollman, Frances Collins, and Stella Mae Copple.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Melvin's life during the visitation on Monday, November 24, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Grayson Funeral Home in Charlestown, Indiana. A Celebration of Life will follow at 6:00 PM also at the funeral home.  Burial will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 at 11:00 am in Grandview Cemetery in Madison, IN.

The family respectfully request that donations be made to Colon Cancer Research or Clark Co 4-H.  Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
