Mercella Lowe-Becca, affectionately known as "Aunt Sis," was born on June 3, 1932 in Seaford Town/Lambs River District, Westmoreland, Jamaica to Martel and Lauretta (Lewis) Hamilton into a loving family. She was raised in a home filled with affection and protection, particularly from her brother, Dennis, who first called her "Sister" and the rest of the siblings followed. She was lovingly known as Sis and then Aunt Sis to everyone Mercella's early years were marked by academic excellence, musical talent, and an upbringing grounded in faith and family. Her commitment to education and church life shaped her into a thoughtful, disciplined, and spiritually devoted young woman.
Mercella's life was defined by love, service, and creativity. Gifted with her hands, she found joy in crafting, gardening, and singing, all while raising her children and supporting her extended family. She believed in the power of hard work and faith, embodying the values she often repeated-such as, "Idle hands are the devil's workshop." Her faith was unwavering, and her involvement in the church's choir and ministry left a lasting spiritual legacy. Throughout her life, she faced trials with quiet strength and resilience. She ran a successful grocery business with her husband, Slyvester Lowe, later relocating and dedicating herself fully to raising her children and caring for nieces, nephews, and others in need. Years later, she found love again and remarried Aliston Ruddyard Becca (Ruddy) and continued to live a life filled with generosity and joy-welcoming neighbors, baking cherished desserts, and always offering a helping hand. Her home became a refuge for many, and her compassion was limitless. Mercella's kindness, wisdom, and nurturing spirit made her a beloved pillar in her community. She gave freely-of her time, her home, her prayers-and never turned away someone in need. Known as "Our Mother Theresa" by her grandchildren, her legacy is one of unwavering faith, selfless love, and unity.
Mercella transitioned from this life on August 5, 2025. She was loved by her children Alden (predeceased her on October 7, 2021), Daphne, Bernandeth, Joan, Charmaine, and Renwich, and step-daughter Natalie. She leaves behind her beloved grandchildren; Keisha, Kayon, Adrion, Kadeen (deceased), Sherene, Shardey, Aisha, Ta'Vonne, Michael, Shaunté, Shomari, Shaheed, and Ryan as well as great-grandchildren; Danei, Dekai, Keyon, Primes, Amiyah, Adriana, Amir, Alivia, Kawesi, Kymani, Chelsea, Hanna, Samuel, Sofia, Olivia, and Shomari, Jr., and a host of nieces and nephews. Preceded in death were her brothers Welesley (Bosey), Dennis, Rupert, Castel, and John and sister Beryl. She leaves behind her siblings Ivy, Phyllis, Errol, Angella, Paulette, Richard, James, and Ezekiel. We will miss her warm and inviting laughter, that filled any room with comfort and love. We will hold fast to her words of encouragement; God is good all the time and reminding us to be grateful for His blessings and to hold on to His promises. Her legacy lives on in every act of kindness we show one another, in every effort we make to stay connected as a family, and in the love we choose to give freely, as she always did.
