Merlin Herbert, 84, of Superior, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on December 10, 2025, at Waterview Shores in Two Harbors.
Born on December 13, 1940, to Edmund and Clara (Bonnin) Herbert, Merlin was a lifelong resident of Superior’s East End neighborhood. Merlin lived a full and meaningful life marked by devotion to his family, love of the outdoors, and deep pride in his country.
Merlin honorably served in three branches of the United States military—Navy, Army Reserves, and Air Force Reserves—with a combined service of 21 years. After completing his military service, Merlin followed his passion for the water and spent several years sailing on the Great Lakes as a Deck Hand and Wheelsman with the Great Lakes Fleet. Being near ships and the open water brought him tremendous joy. He later worked for Superwood/Georgia Pacific in Duluth, MN as a production operator, where he dedicated close to 35 years before his retirement.
Beyond his work, Merlin was a man of many interests. He enjoyed: trains, ships, computers, hunting, and spending time in the outdoors, especially deer hunting. He also enjoyed making his own ammunition, target shooting, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren and grand-dogs, whom he adored.
Merlin was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean (Levine) Herbert, and by his son, Shawn Herbert.
Merlin is survived by his two sons: Michael (Angela) Herbert and Scott (Kris) Herbert; grandchildren: Lila Herbert, Clara Herbert, and Jessie Rolandson; and great-grandchildren, Sebastian and Rainy.
A Celebration of Life will be held on January 24, 2026, at Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, 1209 E 5th Street in Superior. Visitation begins at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place in the spring at Parkview Cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the caring staff of Waterview Shores and Moments Hospice.
“He made the storm be still and the waves of the sea were calmed. Then were they glad because they were at rest. And he brought them to the haven they desired.” -Psalm 107
