Merton Fuquay, age 88, passed away on November 22, 2024. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a true friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Merton was born on May 23, 1936, in San Antonio, TX, to Coleman Steele and Goldie Fuquay, where he spent his formative years. Growing up, he attended Riverside Baptist Church and Brackenridge High School. He excelled in athletics and went on to attend Baylor University, where he played football and ran track. After graduating from Baylor, he became a teacher, coach, and ultimately an assistant superintendent of schools in Amarillo, Texas. Throughout his career, he was dedicated to his work and his students/athletes. He developed a passion for helping others.
In his free time, Merton enjoyed golf with friends and maintained a dedication to running and exercise. He was an active member of every church that he attended: Riverside Baptist in San Antonio, First Baptist Church in Amarillo, and ultimately First Baptist Church in Boerne. Merton served as a teacher of youth and adults and was a deacon for most of his life. More than anything, Merton was a dedicated Christian man who provided guidance, support, and encouragement, no matter what challenges he faced.
Merton is survived by his loving wife, Martha; his children, Melissa Brite, Mel Fuquay (Denise), and Miles Fuquay (Jennifer); and his grandchildren, Rachel Meyer (Jason), Austin Brite, Erin Fust, Pierce Brite, Cole Fuquay (Erin), Ryan Fuquay, Jude Fuquay, Dylan Fuquay, and Jay Fuquay.
His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to "Cure Alzheimer's Fund" Wellesley Hills, MA.
