Meta Walter Obituary
Meta was born in the Bronx, NY on December 24, 1925, the daughter of Albert and Helen (Retz) Kuntz. She graduated from Evander Childs High School and went on to build a life centered on family, service, and community.
She married John J. Walter at St. Mary's Church on May 7, 1950. Together, they raised their three daughters in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx before moving to New Rochelle, NY. Prior to dedicating herself to raising her family, Meta worked for several years as an Assistant Publicity Director.
A quintessential volunteer, Meta was deeply involved in her community. In Throggs Neck, she served for many years as a Girl Scout Leader and as President of the Cadet and Scout Mothers. After her family relocated to New Rochelle, she worked as an Optician's Assistant at Marshall Opticians for 15 years before eventually settling in Somers.
In Somers, Meta was a devoted congregant of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she played an active role in church life. Over the years, she served on the Vestry and the search committee, chaired the Altar Guild, and generously volunteered many hours at the church Thrift Shop. She was also a past president of the Friends of the Somers Library, reflecting her lifelong commitment to service and community engagement.
Meta is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Maida and Keith Sherman of Bronx, Karen and Stephen Kellogg of Carmel, NY and Claudia and Roy Loomis of Stewartsville, NJ as well as her three beloved grandchildren, David, Joanna and Harrison. She was predeceased by her husband, John in 1989 and her brother, Albert Kuntz.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 23, 2026 at 11:00 am at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Somers. Interment of her cremains will take place at a later date at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in White Plains, NY where she will rest alongside her loving husband, John.
