Metta "Irene" Lakin, 80, of Augusta, KS, passed away Tuesday, October 29, 2024. Visitation 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at Headley Funeral Chapel. Graveside service 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta, KS (those attending should use the 12th Street entrance). Irene was born in New Albany, KS on August 25, 1944, to the late Ruby (Richardson) and Melvin Anderson. She had worked as a cook at Bluestem High School, and later worked in parts at Beech for 25 years. Irene cared deeply for her family and was always taking care of them. On September 9, 1962, she married Ronald Lee Lakin in New Albany, KS. He preceded her in death in 2019. She is survived by: daughters, Marsha Martin and husband Todd of Augusta, KS, Lisa Nixon of El Dorado, KS, Deb Engelbrecht and husband Randy of Augusta, KS; sisters, Nancy Wescott and husband Jon of Willard, MO, Joann Houchin of Fredonia, KS; brothers, Bud Anderson and wife Peggy of New Albany, KS, Rick Anderson and wife Becky of Willard, MO; brother in law, Richard Lakin and wife Esther, of El Dorado, KS; grandchildren, Jaime Smith (Colton), Ashley Martin, Derek Highbarger (Sarah), David Highbarger (Amanda), James Nixon, Amy Nixon, Zack Engelbrecht, Emily Engelbrecht, Caleb Rogers (Sarah); great grandchildren, Kinsley Smith, Eva and Adlyn Beardsley, Cayden, Landen, and MyCaela Highbarger, Tristan, Myles, Josh, and Jesse Highbarger, Cole, Peyton, and Reid Rogers. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Jerry and Don Anderson; sisters, Betty Blaker and Melba Hosier; and a grandson, Justin Martin. Memorial donations to Hickory Hollow Animal Refuge Foundation, 14297 SE Cole Creek RD, Leon, KS 67074.
