Michael James Anderson, a charismatic spirit and a loving father and grandfather, was born on April 27, 1977, in the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. He passed away at the age of 46 on July 28, 2023, in Slidell, LA, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him. A self-made man of great intellect, Michael didn't need a degree to show his worth - his life was his greatest teacher, and he lived each day with unparalleled zest and determination.
Michael is the beloved son of Nadine Willoz and James Anderson and the cherished stepson of Barry O'Sullivan. He was an exemplary figure of strength and resilience. He was a loving father to his children, Alexandra Elisabeth Anderson, Madeline Claire Anderson, and Mason James Anderson. His eldest daughter, Alexandra, preceded him in death (2012), but her memory continued to be a guiding light in his life. Though he didn't feel old enough to be called 'Grandpa' he was fine with his grandchildren, Alexandra Elisabeth Sharp and Iris Elisabeth Anderson calling him 'Pops'.
Michael didn't have a formal education, but proved that success in life isn't measured by paper credentials but by the richness of one's experiences. He lived his life one day at a time, learning invaluable lessons from the streets of New Orleans. His keen mind and practical wisdom outshined many, proving that with hardwork, one could indeed be "educated beyond their intelligence."
As a man of many talents and trades, Michael rebuilt homes and, in doing so, reconstructed lives. He created spaces that evoked joy, comfort, and warmth. His brief stint in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Kitty Hawk further exemplified his dedication to service. He passed on this legacy of service to his son, Mason, who now currently serves in the U.S. Navy as well, upholding his father's values.
Michael's interests were as diverse and vibrant as the man himself. He had a fondness for fishing and the tranquil solitude that came with being on the water. His boat was his sanctuary, a place where he found peace and purpose. Even though working on it was sometimes a love-hate relationship, the joy he derived from using it made every moment worth it.
He loved to listen to The Beatles and the band Tool depending on what mood he was in. He loved his now-deceased dog, Charlie, who was his long time best friend, and Michael loved a good whiskey. His wit was sharp, his opinions strong, and his sarcasm legendary. Anyone who knew Michael would tell you that he was a good person. He was a man who, despite his trials, always strived to do his best.
Michael's story reminds us of an inspiring quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." Michael lived this truth resoundingly, trying to make a difference with his every action.
Michael James Anderson, a strong-willed, intelligent, and loving man, lived a life that can inspire us all. His life reminds us that we are not just the sum of our qualifications but the impact of our actions. His legacy will continue to inspire, enlightening the world with the lessons he learned from life - a testament to his indomitable spirit and undeniable resilience.
In the echoes of his laughter, the warmth of his words and the depth of his actions, Michael will forever be remembered. His life has been a journey well-lived, a story well-written, and a legacy well-established. He was a testament to the fact that even without a formal education, one can become an architect of sorts- building not just homes but lives, creating not just spaces but memories, and leaving not just a mark -but a legacy.
Michael's children will be hosting a private ceremony at which they will lay their father to rest by releasing his cremated remains into the place he loved the most, the water where he spent his downtime fishing. In lieu of flowers, they ask for people to show their support by taking some time to relax by the water and possibly catch a fish or two to honor his memory.
