It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our husband and beloved father, Michael Joseph Barnes, who left us on October 6, 2025, in Las Cruces, NM, at the age of 83.
Michael (Mike) was born in Minneapolis, MN, on December 5, 1941, to Vincent and Irene Barnes. He was the third of six children and, following his older brothers, joined the United States Military at age 17. While in the Navy, he served at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island supporting the Heavy Attack Squadron on the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger (CV-61) before receiving an honorable discharge.
After his service, Mike worked for National Cash Register (NCR) as a technician in the El Paso, TX/Las Cruces, NM area. In Las Cruces, he met the love of his life, Sylvia Guerrero, a switchboard operator at the First National Bank Tower. They married on April 16, 1966, and shared nearly 60 years together while raising five children.
Mike dedicated his career to NCR, retiring in 2000 after servicing NCR equipment across Las Cruces and Southern NM. He cherished the friendships he made along the way, especially with family, neighbors and coworkers.
In his youth, Mike loved traveling to national parks, camping, hunting, and fishing. After retirement, he prioritized golfing and watching his beloved Minnesota Vikings and Twins, always surrounded by family. He lived each day for them.
Mike is survived by his wife Sylvia; five children, Kathy Joens (Doug), Theresa Hall, Vincent Barnes (Jessica), Andrew Barnes (Chelsea), and Michelle Marsh (Chris); grandchildren Joseph Arguello, Ryan Arguello, Jaqueline Barnes, Nicholas Barnes, Isabella Adams, Jackson Barnes,
Cassidy Barnes, Ryan Marsh, Alyssa Marsh and Caylee Marsh; his brother John Barnes of Richfield, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
We strive to honor his memory by living our lives fully and carrying forward the kindness, strength and integrity he shared every day. A special thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Mesilla Valley Hospice. The Barnes family has entrusted Getz Funeral Home with arrangements. A private family service and celebration will be held at a later date to honor Mike’s memory and the many lives he touched.
In memory of Mike, please consider a donation to Mesilla Valley Hospice.
