Michael Brady

Michael Brady, long time Albuquerque resident, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Margaret and daughters, Suzanne and Jolie and grandchildren, Nate, Samara, and Oliver. He is predeceased by by his parents, the late Michael and Josephine Baca Brady and older sisters, Emma Brady and Ruby Teta. Michael is the great grandson of Captain Saturnino Baca, the Father of Lincoln County, N.M. and Sheriff William Brady.

Michael was born in Roswell on April 5, 1928. He grew up and attended schools in Roswell. To help his Mother, Michael went to work full time at Walker Air Force Base at 14 as well as attend high school. In 1946, Michael graduated from Roswell High School and had also completed 4 years working in the military as an electrician/communications specialist.

At 18, Michael enlisted in the Navy in World War 2, serving aboard the USS Princeton as a communications specialist stationed in the Pacific. After the war with his savings from high school and the war, Michael was able to buy his Mom a house.

Michael attended UNM beginning his degrees in education. While at UNM he was not invited to join any fraternities. Michael then started his own fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon, and became the president. He also challenged the rules at UNM and became the first man to attend Home Economics so he could learn how to cook. He opened doors for other men to follow careers in the culinary arts.

Michael was recalled to Korea and served on the USS Jason based in Sasebo, Japan. The Jason was a repair ship that salvaged ships that had run into land mines. He was a communications specialist on that ship.

After Korea, Michael finished his degrees, obtaining a Master's Degree in Education and an Education Specialist certificate. He also completed one year of law school. He began teaching in Albuquerque at Wherry Elementary. Michael then transferred to teaching at various USAF bases-Wethersfield, Hahn, Lakenheath, and Mildenhall in England and Germany.

He met and married his wife Margaret McLaughlin in 1960.

After returning from Europe, Michael went on to have a distinguished teaching career and became a principal at various elementary schools. He retired from Marie Hughes Elementary School in 1996.

After retirement, Michael continued to travel with his wife. He continued to have a lifelong love of learning, eventually learning 4 languages, taking computer classes, and recommending good books.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 10, 2024 from 9:30 am to 11:30 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 am at French Funerals Westside Chapel. Interment will take place at 2:30 pm on September 10, 2024 at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
