Michael Charest Obituary

MICHAEL "OPA" JOSEPH CHAREST
Michael "Opa" Joseph Charest went to be with the Lord on January 22, 2024. He was born in Germany on January 17, 1957 to Maria Gertrude Ohl, a German citizen, and Joseph Roy "Skip" Charest who served in the United States Army. Throughout his childhood, he and his family moved around a lot sparking his lifelong journey for adventure.
Michael is survived by his mother, Maria, his six sisters, Bonnie, Jacque, Yvonne, Michelle, and Candy as well as his only brother Patrick. He is also survived by his wife of 37 years who he described as the love of his life from their very first date. He also leaves behind three children, Rachel, Kelly, and Carson as well as two grandchildren, Marin and Adrienne, whom he loved like daughters of his own. Michael learned the value of family from a young age and never stopped working hard to love and support his family.
Michael was a proud member of the SAE fraternity at the University of Florida where he got his degree in Computer Science before being a pioneer in the software and technology field. While having three young children Michael decided to return to school and pursue a Master's of Business degree at the University of North Florida. He was a proud lifelong Gator and Jaguar fan - having had season tickets since the Jaguars first arrived in town. His favorite days were Sunday's getting to watch the Church of Eleven22 and the Jaguars with his family. This was a tradition that he kept with his family until the very end.
Michael had an incredibly deep, unwavering faith in the Lord and served him greatly through his acts of service by being an Elder at Community Presbyterian Church, participating and leading both disciple groups and bible studies at the Church of Eleven22, driving the shelter van on cold nights for many years, and volunteering at the Beaches baptisms in Hannah Park.
Michael was a family man first and foremost and one of his favorite activities to do was to go to the beach. Therefore, in honor of him, we will be having his celebration of life on March 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at the 13th St. beach access in Atlantic Beach.
Michael was a resident of Atlantic Beach for over 30 years and is renowned by his family as finding the perfect place to live. The service will be presided over by Pastor Chris Girrard and Elder Rusty Pritchett from the Church of Eleven22. Music will be played by his in-laws Karin and Al Frosio and Jean Hilton. As well as a special song sung by his granddaughter Marin. Rain date for the service is Sunday March 3rd at 2:00 p.m. Please dress casual and bring beach chairs/blankets to sit on.

To my beloved brother a kindred Human being encountering many challenges in Life, whom deeply Loved HIS soul mate "Lynn." I for one still find IT hard to fathom HIS absence amongst US "survivor's;" but never Forgotten is HIS zeal for compassion in celebrating LIFE to it's fullest, may peace be replaced with compfort to ALL who know "Mike" whom currently rest in the memory of GOD as a spirited man. Let us be thankful for HIS presence we all surely enjoyed while on Earth!

Moving to Punxsutawney my junior year in 1972 Mike quickly became my good friend when I needed one. We wrestled together in high school, played cards in my basement, ate Leo's pizza. Then I went to college and Mike to Florida. Last year in the spring of 2023 Mike, myself, and four other high school friends got together in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the NCAA wrestling championships. We had become aware of Mike's health issues and we wanted to see him. It was a trip I will never forget. Those short three days together reaffirmed what I suspected about the young Mike Charest 50 years ago. He would become a good man, a loving husband, and devoted father. Though there was almost a 50 year gap in our friendship I still felt a closeness to Mike. Lynn, Bonnie, Mrs. Charest and all of Mike's family, deepest condolences from the Boys of Punxsutawney.
