Michael Ray Chavez, a beloved son, brother, uncle, godfather, partner, friend, and educator, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2025, at the age of 54, surrounded by his devoted family.

Born in Carlsbad, New Mexico, on December 3, 1970, Michael lived a life defined by compassion, integrity, and unwavering service to others. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies and a Master’s Degree in Education from New Mexico State University, and for more than 17 years, he dedicated himself wholeheartedly to teaching and mentoring students in the Bernalillo Public Schools system.

Michael was more than an exceptional educator. He was a guiding light in the lives of countless students and a pillar of the Bernalillo community. For those whose children had the honor of being in his classroom, he was not only a teacher but also a source of inspiration, encouragement, and support. His kindness, patience, and deep love for learning touched generations, leaving a legacy that transcends the walls of any classroom.

In addition to his work in education, Michael was a passionate advocate for equity and justice within the school system. As an active member and Vice President of NEA Bernalillo, he championed fair wages, safe and supportive schools, and respect for all educational professionals. His tireless advocacy, courageous leadership, and deep sense of justice profoundly impacted the lives of educators and students alike.

Michael faced his cancer diagnosis with the same quiet strength and grace that characterized his life. He fought bravely, never losing his warmth, humility, or his sense of humor. His courage and resilience were nothing short of extraordinary.

Michael is survived by his loving partner, Anthony Bustos Jr and Anthony “Ab” Bustos III., whose steadfast love and care never wavered throughout Michael’s illness. He is also survived by his mother, Florisa Sandate (Frankie); his father, Joe Chavez; his brothers, Mel Perez (Melissa) and Manny Perez (Sally); sisters, Thelma Mireles (Steve); Jennifer Chavez and his beloved nieces and nephews: Amara Perez and fiancé Austin Jennings, Frank Allan Perez, Josh Perez, Presley Perez, great-nephew Grayson Jennings, Emily Parraz, Jason Griffin, Hunter Griffin.

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Amelia "Weetha" Acevedo, whose memory he cherished deeply.

Michael also leaves behind his dog “Zoey” and his loyal cat “Sox”, who brought him immeasurable comfort and companionship. His love for his pets was a reflection of his gentle soul and the deep care he extended to all living beings.

Michael will be remembered for the lives he touched, the wisdom he shared, and the immense love he gave so freely. His presence will be missed, but his spirit will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
