Obituary of Michael Cono
Michael Cono, age 67, Fortified with the sacraments of the Holy Mother Church on November 30, 2023, in San Diego, California. Born August 10, 1956, in Flushing, New York. Michael was a cherished member of his community.
Michael was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Mary Kay Reiter Cono, and a loving father to his son, Joseph Allen Cono. He held his family close to his heart and cherished the time spent together watching beautiful sunsets and playing games at many San Diego parks.
In his earlier years, Michael attended Kings Park High School in Kings Park, New York, where he laid the foundation for a life filled with knowledge and wisdom. He furthered his education at Purdue University and then at the University of Texas at Austin. Michael graduated from Stony Brook at State University of New York where he received his Bachelor of Science with Applied Mathematics. He continued his education at Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri with a Master of Arts in Management.
He valued education and was always eager to expand his knowledge and helped others to expand theirs. He tutored homeless GED students at St. Vincent DePaul of San Diego to assist them with obtaining gainful employment.
He dedicated numerous Thanksgiving and Christmas days to volunteer and provide meals to the homeless, driven by his compassion for the underprivileged and a strong sense of purpose to serve others.
For 27.5 years, Michael generously shared his skills as a Project Manager/Management Engineer at Kaiser Permanente. He found immense joy in collaborating with his colleagues, feeling valued and motivated to support his team and the Kaiser family in surpassing their collective objectives.
One of Michael's favorite hobbies was vacationing with his family and exploring some amazing sites within the United States and Canada. He found solace and joy in exploring the beauty of our National Parks.
His most memorable achievement was conquering the summit of Mount Whitney on several occasions. His love for nature guided him to the top, leaving him with cherished memories of each remarkable journey. This achievement symbolized his determination and unwavering spirit in the face of challenges.
Michael was an avid sports fan. He loved watching Purdue football and basketball. But his true love was the New York Yankees. He definitely enjoyed the rivalry with his St. Louis family when the Yankees played the Cardinals.
A ceremony to honor and celebrate Michael's life will be held at The Immaculata Catholic Church at USD Campus, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, CA 92110 on Tuesday February 20, 2024. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM; Rosary 10:30 AM; Funeral Mass 11:00 AM. A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Louis, MO for family and friends at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Immaculata Catholic Church at USD Campus in Michael's memory. Contributions to this cause will help continue the important work of the church, which has a special place in Michael, Mary and Joseph's heart.
Michael is survived by his loving wife, Mary Kay Reiter Cono, and his son, Joseph Allen Cono. He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Cono, mother, Rose Cono, sister, Katherine Menk, and brother, Steve Cono. Their memories will forever be cherished by those whose lives they touched.
During this time of grief, let us come together to honor and pay tribute to the life of Michael Cono. His presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever remain in our hearts. May his soul find eternal peace and may his legacy inspire us to embrace each day with love and kindness.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mike 13 years ago when I arrived at KP San Diego. He was a kind man and very knowledgeable. I could tell he was a pillar here at KP. Whenever I saw him he was pleasant and gave you a warm greeting. He will be missed.

Mike was my advisor for the first ever PI course at Kaiser. He showed me the basics of using charts to show my data and results. I could tell from the first day of meeting him that he was passionate about helping others and genuinely wanted to see you succeed. He always remembered me whenever we ran into each other and always took the time to chat about life. He would always remind me to take time to explore the world and find a passion. It's because of him that I made hiking our local trails a Saturday tradition with my wife. I will miss his kind soul and the advice he would always share. I know he's probably still working up in heaven at this very moment.

I have so many fond memories of Mike that it's hard to pick only one thing to sum up what he meant to me. Mike was a statistician's statistician. He taught me so much about math...I recall his lesson on "tukey charts" right before he donated his kidney to his brother.... since Mike was so seriously ill afterward, he equated his illness to the "3rd outer fence of a Tukey chart"! I told him that thanks to him I actually understood what he said! Mike knew how much I enjoyed learning from him.

I also remember our fond competition between my alma mater Washingon and his Purdue in the Rose Bowl. I had a beautiful purple velvet stocking with a purple rose in it next to a small sad little burlap stocking with a black rose it in hug on the fake fireplace in my office! Mike loved the teasing!

Mike was very quiet and humble at work about all he did for the community. His heart was so large and giving. Earth won't be the same without him.
