Michael J. Cunningham, age 55, known affectionately as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully at home in Canton on January 17, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Syosset, NY, Mike's journey began on a path filled with joy, love, and a boundless zest for life. He leaves behind a legacy of warmth, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones and community.
Mike was the beloved husband of Cheryl L. Cunningham (née Dolan), sharing a life full of cherished memories and unwavering partnership. He was a devoted father to Dylan and Emma Cunningham, both of Canton, who will carry forward his spirit of compassion and strength. The loving son of Dennis Cunningham and his wife Brigitta, of Long Island, NY, and Margaret Baudo and her husband Frank, of Queens, NY, Mike was raised with values that shaped the remarkable man he became. His sister Beth Skinner and her husband Kevin, of Dennisport, and Maureen Nelson and her husband Michael, of Westborough, will fondly remember their brother's infectious laughter, humor and kindness.
Mike's extended family, including his stepbrother Michael Baudo and his wife Tracey of Seaford, NY, Kevin Baudo and his wife Jennifer of Wantagh, NY, Marjorie Burnside of Southport, NC, and Joseph Burnside and his wife Laurie of Sayville, NY, will miss his board game skills at family gatherings. His numerous nieces and nephews will hold dear the memories of their fun-loving "cool" uncle.
Raised in Westbury, NY, Mike was a proud graduate of W.T. Clarke High School. He went on to earn his BS in Business from SUNY Geneseo, NY, laying the groundwork for a successful career in finance. Mike was an institutional fixed income salesperson with Executive/Managing Director titles at Morgan Stanley, Stifel Nicolaus, FBR Capital and Fleet Boston Financial. His colleagues respected his acumen and integrity. After retiring, Mike honed his passion for carpentry and house flipping, which allowed him to express his creativity and workmanship.
Mike's life in Canton, MA, over the last 25 years, was marked by active involvement in the community. His love for sports and mentoring youth shone brightly as he coached Lacrosse, Hockey, and Little League Baseball. An avid golfer, Mike was a member of the Blue Hills Country Club, where he enjoyed many rounds with friends and family. His adventurous spirit found him outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, boating, cross-country skiing, running marathons, snowmobiling, motorcycling or dirt bike riding. He had a soft spot and caring heart for animals as evident by his love for his three dogs, Sydney, Reise and Roxie.
Mike will be remembered as a friendly and kind man, whose generosity and vivacious spirit touched the lives of all who knew him. His warm smile brightened a room, his laughter was contagious, his advice was sought after, and his ability to make anyone feel welcome was unparalleled. Mike's life was a testament to the power of positivity, the strength of family bonds, and the joy of active engagement in one's passions.
As we say farewell to Michael J. Cunningham, we celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the countless ways he enriched the lives of others. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us. Mike's story does not end here; it lives on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the community that he helped build and nurture. He will be deeply missed, but the legacy of his warmth, love, and vitality will forever be a beacon for his family and friends.
