It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Michael Joseph D'Elia, known affectionately to many as "Big Mike." On May 14, 2025, his journey came to a peaceful close in Georgetown, Texas, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. Born on May 28, 1955, in the bustling city of New York, New York, Mike was a beacon of intelligence, generosity, honor, and courage throughout his 69 years.
Mike lived a life rich in accomplishments and service. After graduating from Marist College in New York, he worked as a chemical engineer in the semiconductor industry for nearly 30 years. Known for his intelligence, reliability, and precision, he patented semiconductor engineering processes that are still used to this day. His dedication to education and learning was exemplified in his role as an adjunct professor for Austin Community College, where his wisdom and passion for knowledge were passed on to many aspiring professionals.
At 50 years old, Mike felt the call of public service and pursued becoming a law enforcement officer. He went on to serve his community and the citizens of Williamson County in his role as a Sheriff's Deputy for 15 years. Anyone lucky enough to hear his "cop stories" could see that when it came to protecting others, Mike never hesitated to put his life on the line - and indeed he did so, many times. His courage and dedication to duty was deeply admired.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Mike was a master communicator, possessing a lifelong passion for HAM radio, an activity he dedicated over 50 years to. He regularly talked to other radio enthusiasts around the world and would even play chess games over the radio. He made a point to donate radio equipment to school radio clubs so that kids could explore the passion he shared.
His dexterity extended to carpentry, a hobby that showcased his meticulous nature, attention to detail, and ability to create art with his hands. His passion for reading displayed his ever-present desire to learn. Mike would often read books multiple times, taking diligent notes and highlighting key points, ensuring he fully grasped the concepts within. Mike was also an aviator who loved flying, evidenced by his years as a private pilot.
A man of faith, Mike was an active member of the Catholic Church, where he found solace and community. He silently supported causes close to his heart such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
A true Texan at heart, his love for the Lone Star State was immense - particularly the rural tranquility and the community of Williamson County. Mike could fix and build almost anything, a skill he often used to help his friends, neighbors, and co-workers.
As those who knew him would attest, Mike was intelligent, generous, and courageous. His amazing memory often surprised his loved ones, and his quick wit and New York-Italian attitude brought humor and warmth to those around him.
In his life's story, the chapters that Mike cherished the most were those filled with the love of his family. His radiant love story with his fiancée, Andrea Schiele, was a testament to the joy they found in each other's company. He was a proud father to his son Michael K. D'Elia, who, along with his fiancée Veronica, admired his dad's strength, wisdom, and care for others.
Mike's lifelong bond with his brother Frank and sister-in-law Lucille, was one of mutual respect and deep familial ties. His niece Christine, her husband Jon, and their children knew the warmth of his kindness and the guidance of his wisdom. He was a beacon in the lives of his stepdaughters, Lauren and Katie Schiele. And in his role as "Big Pop," he shared a special connection with his little granddaughter Sofia, who affectionately dubbed herself "Little Pop," a playful nod to their relationship.
As we remember Mike, we are reminded of the words of the American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson: "The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well." There is no doubt that Mike D'Elia lived by these words, making a significant difference in the lives of those he touched.
Mike's absence will be felt deeply by those who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, his fearless spirit in the face of adversity, and his boundless generosity will continue to inspire us all. He was a man who lived with purpose, loved with all his heart, and left this world a much better place than he found it.
Mike, your memory will forever be etched in our hearts, a beacon guiding us through the challenges of life with the same courage and grace you displayed in every endeavor you undertook. Your journey here may have ended, but your story will be told for generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, please consider giving to Mike's favorite charities - St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, MD Anderson, or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
A Graveside Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24th, at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. We will be going in procession from the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, located at 508 S. Rock Street, in Georgetown. Please met in the parking lot south of the Sheriff's Office on Rock St. at 12:00 p.m., for a 12:30 p.m. departure.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24th, at Beck Funeral Home in Cedar Park, followed by a reception until 6pm.

I always enjoyed visiting with Mike on the phone and hearing the pride he had for his son and fiancée and all of the good work they were doing in this world. Mike had such passion and compassion for helping the children at St. Jude. I always knew I would have a meaningful conversation when I called him/he called me. I will miss talking with him, but know he is watching us from above with a smile on his face.

I was fortunate to have met Mike early in my career with Austin Community College. Two of my colleagues, Laura Marmolejo and Shanon Markham, shared a vision with me that we could create something special in the semiconductor industry. And that's when Mike entered the picture. A decade later, from our modest beginnings we grown into a nationally recognized Advanced Manufacturing department with a specialty in the semiconductor space, and Mike was the driver behind the semiconductor curriculum. For a community college to reach the level of influence we aspired to have, we needed credibility. Mike gave us that credibility, and so much more. He brought integrity, inspiration, and a commanding presence in the classroom. I cherish the times he came to my office and stood in the doorway, his smile lighting up the room, and talked to me about what we needed to do to move to the next level. When Samsung asked us to develop a program to educate freshly minted college engineers about semiconductor wafer fabrication processes, Mike led the way. The classes he developed were cutting edge, and his command of the material was awe inspiring. His students consistently praised him for his knowledge, but also for his teaching style. He was accessible in a way that only really good teachers are. He was kind, tough, smart, and forever reliable. But most importantly, he was trustworthy. I respected Mike in a way that I have reserved for very few men in my life, because I have met very few men worthy of the highest level of respect. I will forever be grateful for having known him and I know that nothing that we have achieved at ACC would have been remotely possible without his foundational contributions.

Thank you for everything, Mike. I will miss you.

Although I only met Mike less than 2 years ago when I joined ACC, he left a deep impression that I will always carry with me. Not only in vast catalog of lecture material that he created for ACCs classes, but also by the strength of his personality and teaching style that reached so many students through the years. Myself included. I had the incredible privilege of learning much of the course material by shadowing Mike. And I am inspired by memories of him with every class I teach.

I have had the privilege of knowing Mike for many years through ACC. I still remember running into him in the St. Louis parking lot when he was picking up his son. I was so happy to see him because I really needed a semiconductor instructor and there was no one better than Mike. I was so thankful when he agreed to start teaching again. Mike was so passionate about helping students learn about the field. Everyone always loved his class and his interesting stories. He will be missed!

I met Mike when I was a young engineer at SEMATECH, we both worked in the Diffusion area. I then had an opportunity to work with Mike again at Austin Community College, where we both taught classes in semiconductor manufacturing. I was always impressed by Mike's intelligence and straight talk. I learned a lot from him and have wonderful memories of our time together. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. Mike, you will be forever missed. May you rest in peace and God keep you safe in his hands. Your friend, Alberto Quinonez
