Michael F. D'Onofrio passed away suddenly at his home on January 12, 2025, A lifelong resident of New Rochelle, Michael was the most enigmatic and caring of men. He was born on April 8, 1955 to Nicholas and Isabel D'Onofrio and grew up as a neighborhood favorite. He attended New Rochelle High School where he played football and baseball. He went on to study at American University and St. John's graduate school. Michael was a beloved educator, fi rst at St. Nicholas of Tolentine and then for over 25 years at Mount Vernon High School. "Mr. D" taught English and instilled a love of literature in the most reluctant of students. He continued to share his talents, working with high school students hoping to score high on the SAT's. His devotion to his craft helped many achieve acceptance into the universities of their dreams. An avid sports fan Michael coached football at MVHS and passed on his passion to his nieces and nephews. Mike was well known for his daily walks around downtown New Rochelle, always stopping to say hello to whomever he passed. One of his true gifts was his innate value of treating all people the same, regardless of status or lot in life. Michael embodied a genuine decency to give help, guidance or just a smile to those who he thought needed it. He maintained life long friendships but his true dedication was to the members of his family. Michael was predeceased by his beloved parents and his brother Paul D'Onofrio. He is survived by his sisters, Donna Ramunto (Carmine) and Diane D'Onofrio Delgado. He leaves behind nieces Dina Ramunto (Matt), Christina D'Onofrio Allen (Kelsey), Juliana Delgado (Steven), nephews Nicholas Ramunto (Stephanie) and Daniel Delgado (Matthew) and grand nephews and niece Nicholas and Stella Ramunto and Christopher Allen. Michael's nieces and nephews were his pride, his joy and his legacy. A wake will be held in honor of Michael at Lloyd Maxcy Funeral home on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 4pm-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 at Blessed Sacrament Church at 9:30 am. Burial will follow immediately at Beechwood Cemetery in New Rochelle. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cycle for Survival: http://mskcc.convio.net/goto/CycleforMichael "Now cracks a noble heart. Goodnight, Sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest and may you sit in the Splendid, Silent Sun." Mr. D... a teacher I will never forget. Mr. Donofrio was one special teacher that knew every student by their first name. He would joke with you in the hallways and also in class, but he stood his grounds when it came to classwork. He would give you his honest opinion of your school work and also encourage you to do better and congratulate you when you accomplish your goals. He will never be forgotten.

He was my English teacher. He inspired me so much. He would remind me of what I could do if I applied myself and if was kind to myself. He was different, he was cool yet held authority in a way that very few teachers did . As a young AA teenager, he found a way to relate to me w/o trying to "related to me" he was my favorite teacher ever. I thought about him last year but didn´t know how to find him. Hearing of his passing saddens me, I keep him and his family in my heart and prayers . Yeah the angels English Mr D!!

Wow. I had just asked about Mr. D about a week ago. I'm a graduate of 1986 and had always thought that Mr. D was cool. He was smart, energetic, and hip to the things that the students had going on; especially music. I saw him several years after graduation, and he remembered me. One of the coolest and hip teachers ever! Rest well Mr. D, and thank you. You will never be forgotten

Mr D'Onofrio was the best English teacher I had the pleasure of having, he is/was a GREAT man. I mean while in school and even after I went to him for a lot. My last encounter with him was a telephone call last year and we spoke briefly I found out how he was and I told him about me... I wanted to see him again, but didn't get the chance. I will always remember his trueness, his cuss words, and mostly him just being him..
I LOVE YOU MR D, PATRINA HICKMAN-JOHNSON

I am beyond a loss for words. D; JUST D as I would call him and he I because my name started with a D. We had an instant connection and he fostered growth in each one of his students as if they were his own. He was one of the few in which you sought him out and couldn´t wait to get to his class. He simply made learning fun! It never stopped at the classroom door but spilled into the hallways if you ran into him. His smile was contagious as he wore it like a new pair of kicks that allowed him to float. He would often cross my mind - even more so as I followed in his footsteps and became a teacher as well and also his coworker. The memories we shared as now I was a grownup and had a different perspective. TRUST that he will NEVER be forgotten. Love you D!

My heart is broken beyond measure. Mr. D, possessed an incredible gift of appreciating each human as they were. He taught so much more than English, he taught dedication, perseverance, passion and how to exude pure Joy for life. So many positive memories to cherish.
The love your student body shares for you is matched only by the love you had for us. It is clear you were doing what you loved. Sleep in perfect peace Mr. D. Thanks for the LVE and tremendous example of a beautiful spirit.
