Michael F. D'Onofrio

Michael F. D'Onofrio passed away suddenly at his home on January 12, 2025, A lifelong resident of New Rochelle, Michael was the most enigmatic and caring of men. He was born on April 8, 1955 to Nicholas and Isabel D'Onofrio and grew up as a neighborhood favorite. He attended New Rochelle High School where he played football and baseball. He went on to study at American University and St. John's graduate school. Michael was a beloved educator, fi rst at St. Nicholas of Tolentine and then for over 25 years at Mount Vernon High School. "Mr. D" taught English and instilled a love of literature in the most reluctant of students. He continued to share his talents, working with high school students hoping to score high on the SAT's. His devotion to his craft helped many achieve acceptance into the universities of their dreams. An avid sports fan Michael coached football at MVHS and passed on his passion to his nieces and nephews. Mike was well known for his daily walks around downtown New Rochelle, always stopping to say hello to whomever he passed. One of his true gifts was his innate value of treating all people the same, regardless of status or lot in life. Michael embodied a genuine decency to give help, guidance or just a smile to those who he thought needed it. He maintained life long friendships but his true dedication was to the members of his family. Michael was predeceased by his beloved parents and his brother Paul D'Onofrio. He is survived by his sisters, Donna Ramunto (Carmine) and Diane D'Onofrio Delgado. He leaves behind nieces Dina Ramunto (Matt), Christina D'Onofrio Allen (Kelsey), Juliana Delgado (Steven), nephews Nicholas Ramunto (Stephanie) and Daniel Delgado (Matthew) and grand nephews and niece Nicholas and Stella Ramunto and Christopher Allen. Michael's nieces and nephews were his pride, his joy and his legacy. A wake will be held in honor of Michael at Lloyd Maxcy Funeral home on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 4pm-8pm. A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 at Blessed Sacrament Church at 9:30 am. Burial will follow immediately at Beechwood Cemetery in New Rochelle.
