Michael DeMaio Obituary

In Loving Memory of Michael "Mike" Louis DeMaio
Michael Louis DeMaio, affectionately known as Mike, filled the lives of those around him with laughter, joy, and a contagious zest for life. Born on February 3, 1954 in Okinawa, Japan, he journeyed through this world spreading warmth and kindness until his passing on August 9, 2023, in Norfolk, Virginia at the age of 69.
Throughout his remarkable journey, Mike thrived as a master plumber for Smith & Keene, dedicating over 30 years of his life to honing his craft. His unwavering commitment and expertise earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and the countless individuals whose lives he touched through his work.
Beyond his professional pursuits, Mike found solace in spending his days at the beach, but not just any beach, OV Beach. Whether basking in the sun or walking along the shore, he found tranquility and happiness in the embrace of nature's beauty.
A devoted sports enthusiast, Mike's passion for his beloved teams, the Dallas Cowboys and Duke Blue Devils, was unrivaled. He could always be found cheering them on with unwavering support and enthusiasm. His infectious spirit made any game day gathering an event to remember, as Mike had a natural ability to uplift the room with his contagious energy.
But above all, Mike cherished the company of his friends and family. He had an extraordinary ability to connect with people, making everyone feel valued and loved. His presence at any gathering ensured that laughter and good times would follow. He was truly the life of the party, bringing light and happiness to every moment shared.
Mike is now reunited with his parents, John and Susan DeMaio, who preceded him in death. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for his surviving family members and friends. His sisters, Lois DeMaio Smith & husband Bill, Barbara A. Feight & husband Vic, and Linda DeMaio Ash & husband Dennis, each carry the warmth of his spirit in their hearts.
He also leaves behind nieces Kelly A. Beckwith & husband John, Jamie Ash Adams & husband Will, and great niece Krista Beckwith, as well as great nephew Jayson Beckwith. Mike adored his great-great-nephews, Harper James Adams and Karsyn Beckwith, who brought immeasurable joy to his life. Additionally, he shared special bonds with many more extended family members and friends, who were blessed to have him in their lives.
Services to commemorate Mike's remarkable journey will be held at the Altmeyer Funeral Home Southside Chapel on Monday, August21, where family and friends will gather and visit from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm. It is a time for all to come together, sharing stories, memories, and finding solace in the collective love and support that surrounds us during these challenging times.
While we mourn the loss of such a radiant soul, let us also celebrate the incredible impact that Mike had on our lives. He embodied the true meaning of living life to the fullest and taught us to find delight in the simplest of pleasures.
May his spirit continue to inspire us to embrace each day with gratitude, to laugh often, and to cherish the bonds we share with loved ones. Remembering Mike's vibrant presence will forever light our paths as we navigate the journey ahead.
Though we say goodbye for now, Mike's spirit will forever remain with us, reminding us to live life to the fullest, just as he did.
The family would like to give Special thanks to Virginia Oncology Associates staff and Dr. Scott Cross for the unwavering care and compassion and Nurse Angel at Duke University Medical Center for her love and compassionate care to Mike and family.
