CLARKSVILLE – Ramon 'Ray' F. DeMaio, 83, of Clarksville died on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at the Coös County Nursing Hospital in W. Stewartstown after a prolonged period of declining health.
He was born in New London, England, on September 9, 1941, where his father was serving in the U.S. Army during WW II. After the war, his parents returned to the U.S. and he was raised in Massachusetts.
For many years, Ramon served as a police officer in Franklin, Mass. In 1988, he and his wife moved to the north country where his family had had a long-time relationship with notorious hunting guide, Rudy Shatney. Ray continued as a guide for Rudy for many years. He also worked at Brooks Chevrolet and at the Bose Manufacturing plant in Colebrook. Ray and his wife then purchased the Redwood Store and Motel in East Colebrook, changed the name to Diamond Peaks and operated it successfully until he sold it and retired.
Ray moved to Clarksville after the death of his wife in 2009. He was an active member of his community, serving as a town selectman for 14 years. He loved anything having to do with guns and hunting, he enjoyed snowmobiling in the winter, and he loved to be at the Felton Camp in Deadwater. He also enjoyed horseback riding.
Ray leaves behind his partner of the past 17 years, Mary McGann of Clarksville; three children, Kevin DeMaio, Ramon DeMaio, Jr., and Diane DeMaio; two granddaughters, Desiree Lawrence and Vivian DeMaio; and two great-granddaughters.
He is predeceased by his loving wife, Shirley, his parents, Anthony and Dorothy DeMaio, and a brother, Philip.
At Ray's specific request, there are no public services scheduled. He will be privately interred at the Ben Young Hill Cemetery in Clarksville.
Condolences may be offered to the family on-line by going to www.jenkinsnewman.com.
Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Jenkins & Newman Funeral Home in Colebrook.
