Michael Emory Dixon Thirsk, aged 78, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, in Newport News, VA. Born on June 24, 1947, in Fernandina Beach, FL, Michael lived a life rich with love, service, and adventure.
A proud Vietnam Veteran and patriot, Michael dedicated a significant portion of his life to the U.S. Army, embodying honor and commitment to his country. Upon retiring from the military, he continued to channel his energy and passion into serving others through his entrepreneurial venture, Mike's Hot Dogs at City Hall in Newport News. His friendly demeanor and delicious fare left a lasting impression on the community. Later, he devoted his skills to James City County Recycling, where he retired, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and hard work.
Michael's adventurous spirit took him on many journeys, often traveling and cruising with his beloved late wife, Kum Sun Dixon, whom he met playing bingo at the USO in South Korea. They shared 55 beautiful years together, filled with love and exploration. He cherished visiting his childhood home in Fernandina Beach, FL, reliving fond memories while creating new ones with family.
He was an avid fisherman, finding peace and joy in the tranquility of nature. His passions were diverse, from the thrill of NASCAR to the peaceful art of bird watching. Whether cheering on Florida's football teams or enjoying the simple pleasure of people-watching, Michael embraced life with vigor and enthusiasm. He was a man who understood the art of living well, enjoying a good cocktail and the camaraderie it often brought. Michael's family was the heart of his world, especially his grandchildren, who affectionately called him "Papa." He is remembered as a loving father to his daughters, Yong Dunston and Mary Ann Dixon, and a doting grandfather to Mary Nicole Hundley (Mike) and Bryant Michael "Mikey" Dixon. His warmth and wisdom touched the lives of his sisters Ollie Cook and Deborah Swaringen, along with numerous special friends and extended family members.
A man of faith, Michael was a member of Water's Edge Church of Yorktown, VA, and actively participated in the VFW and American Legion, always striving to support his fellow veterans and community.
Preceded in death by his cherished wife Kum Sun, his parents Mary Ruth and John R. Thirsk, and siblings John, Stanley, and Joyce Thirsk, Michael's legacy of love and strength endures in the hearts of those he leaves behind.
