Michael Ellzey Obituary
Michael Glenn Ellzey, 54, affectionately known as Glenn, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, at home with his wife, Carole, by his side, after a battle with cancer.
Glenn was born on June 26, 1970, to Michael B. and Evelyn W. Ellzey at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He grew up in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he attended Trinity Methodist Church and Jacksonville High School. He played soccer, joined the marching band as a trombonist, and volunteered at local youth community centers. Some of his fondest memories were of yearly summer road trips with his grandparents, Harry and Harriet, visiting family.
Glenn began attending UNCW in 1988, where he rowed crew and started his career in radio. Throughout the 90s in Wilmington, he worked in various positions in radio, becoming Operations Manager for groups such as Sea-Comm Media and Cumulus. He made lasting friendships and created fond memories with everyone he encountered.
In 2003, while working in audio-video installation, Glenn met the love of his life, Carole. He hosted the show Swap Shop on Sunday mornings, and in 2006, he proposed to Carole on air. They married later that year and became a family of five with Carole's three children.
In 2013, Glenn became a Certified Medical Assistant, graduating from Miller Motte Technical College. He started in urgent care and then moved into family practice, where he was loved by his patients and coworkers for his humor and kindness.
As he renewed his faith, one of Glenn's final wishes was to be baptized. This wish was fulfilled by Pastor Aaron Lee on March 4, 2025. His other final wish was to be present at his daughter's wedding, which took place on March 15, 2025. Both events were celebrated at their home in Wilmington, surrounded by family and friends.
Glenn's favorite activities included skateboarding, kayaking, watching his favorite sports teams, anything related to music or the arts, spending time with his family and friends, and most of all being with Carole and their cats. He truly loved and lived life fully.
Glenn was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn, and his son, Jonathan. He is survived by his wife, Carole; son, Ryan (Jessica); daughter, Whitney (Theophilus); grandchildren, Daniel and Zachary; father, Michael; sister, Susan (Jonathan); niece, Ashley; and nephew, Matthew.
A Memorial Service to honor Glenn's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at 1:00pm at Wilmington Funeral & Cremation, officiated by Pastor Aaron Lee of Coastal Community Baptist Church.
"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgement, but has passed from death to life." John 5:24
