Michael Robert Fitzgibbon, known to many as "Mike or Fitz", passed away peacefully at his home in Brandon, MS, at the age of 70, on Monday, March 17, 2025. Born on May 19, 1954, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Robert Eugene and Helen Delores Fitzgibbon, Michael grew up in Pittsburgh and spent many years in Cleveland, OH and Wilmington NC before making his home in the Jackson area.
Michael proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force for four years. His adventurous spirit led him to work as an EMT, a scuba diver, and an oil rig diver. Later, his career brought him to Jackson as a site manager for TMS International. It was in the Reservoir area that he met his late in life love Julie. For eleven wonderful years, they shared countless adventures and loving companionship, traveling together to places like Thailand, the Dominican Republic, Red Rocks, and the Smoky Mountains. He especially cherished his visits to Thailand to spend time with his dear friends, John and Goy. His favorite annual trip was the golf outing in PA with his childhood friends who he loved as brothers.
Known for his caring nature and magnetic personality, Michael never met a stranger. He was a man of resilience and strength, often described as having "nine lives like a cat". He loved boating on the Reservoir and was often the life of the party, frequently returning from outings with a pontoon boat full of friends. He loved his friends and formed lasting bonds with his found family at Legend's a place he would often frequent in the evenings.
Michael had a deep love for his family, both biological and chosen. He was a devoted father to his son, Sean Fitzgibbon, and a proud grandfather to Alix Fitzgibbon. His heart also embraced his surrogate daughter Lindsey (Russell) Singleton and loved her children Samantha and Tracy as if they were his own. Also Seth, April and Keat Richards were like family. He is survived by his loving sisters, Kerry Beam and Laurie Regrut and his beloved father Robert (Pap) Fitzgibbon.
Michael was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Helen Dolores Fitzgibbon; his brother, Kevin Fitzgibbon; and his treasured cat, Scardy.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated caregivers who provided exceptional care and comfort during Michael's final years: his nurses- Laney, Brittany, Stacy, and Shaunte; Dr. Jason Murphy and Mary Claire Ponder; and his physical therapist, Haley.
A Blessing Service will be held on Saturday, July 26 at 11:00am at Schellhaas Funeral Home, Inc., 388 Center Avenue,
