Michael Louis Gentile passed away in Bloomington, IN on February 12, 2025. He was 82. Born in Chicago, IL to Louis and Rose Gentile, Mike enjoyed a childhood enriched by his Italian heritage and the Catholic Church. Mike was a proud student of Our Lady of Pompeii Elementary school, St. Ignatius High School and DePaul University where he met and later married Donna Shiffer, an enduring partnership of 57 years.
Mike went on to serve in the United States Army, fulfilling a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968-1969. He went on to earn a master's degree from the Illinois Institute of Technology in electrical engineering and moved to Bloomington, IN in 1970 to become an engineer and civilian employee of the US Navy at NSWC CRANE where he dedicated 38 years of distinguished service. In his spare time, he earned Master's in Public Administration from Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Mike was very active in giving back to the Bloomington community, serving on numerous boards including the Bloomington Hospital and a founding force behind New Hope for Families. For three decades he was a devoted parishioner of St. Charles Catholic Church and for the past 20 years, St. Paul Catholic Center.
Mike is survived by his sons, Nicholas (Tina) and Matthew (Kellie); his grandchildren, Boden, Grady, and Emery; his sister, Janet Palumbo; and his nephew, Michael Palumbo. He is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Donna Gentile.
The family would like to thank the outstanding care team: Sara Edwards, Chrissy Street, Jenny Godwin, and the Hospice House staff for helping Mike in his time of need.
