Michael Ashby Heaton, of Big Pool, Maryland, a devoted husband, proud veteran, and lifelong outdoorsman, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026 surrounded by his family.
A Life of Service and Learning
Born and raised in
Alexandria, Virginia, Mike was a 1964 graduate of Francis C. Hammond High School in
Alexandria, VA, Mike went on to serve his country with honor as a veteran of the United States Navy. His curiosity and dedication to learning led him to the University of Virginia, where he earned degrees in both Architecture and Criminal Justice.
Passions and Artistry
Mike was a man who found beauty in both the grand scale of nature and the fine details of craftsmanship. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who respected the wilderness, a passion he translated into his work as a skilled taxidermist. When he wasn't in the woods, Mike could often be found at his workbench, where he was a dedicated model train enthusiast, meticulously building worlds in miniature. His artistic abilities were endless and Mike always seemed to know the exact moment when those talents were needed to put a smile on one of his grandchildrens' faces. Mike was also a lifelong "Redskins" fan.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Nancy Younker-Heaton. Together, they built a life filled with family and shared memories.
He is also survived by:
His Sister: Sue Kruege and her husband, Richard.

His Children: Sherri Gehrke (husband Derek) of Round Lake, IL; Henry Younker (wife Leslie) of Oxford, GA; and Bonnie Younker (partner Loyal/Kansas) of Mercersburg, PA.

He was also blessed with six great-grandchildren: Avery, Theo, Heath, Harrison, Madison, and Arlo.
Mike was preceded in death by his grandson, Jason True.
