Michael Kellar, known affectionately as Bubba by those closest to him, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2025, in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Born in Detroit, Michigan on July 7, 1942 to his parents Orville and Ruby Kellar, Michael's journey through life was marked by an unwavering spirit and a heart that knew no bounds. His departure has left a void in the Midtown/Wayne State University community, where he was revered as the "Community Angel" and a stalwart Neighborhood Watchdog.
Michael's life was one of service and joy. He managed rental properties and performed repairs, always there to lend a hand, whether someone got locked out or needed support in any way. His presence in the community was a beacon of reliability and kindness.
A true fan of the Detroit Tigers, Michael's loyalty to his team was as steadfast as his dedication to his friends. He could often be found with a radio in hand, listening intently to the games, living each moment alongside his favorite team. His other passions included horse racing, the melodic strains of old folk country music, and the intrigue of old murder mystery and crime films.
Michael's love for his beloved pet, Callie Kitty, was a testament to his compassionate nature. Callie Kitty continues to thrive in the Wayne State neighborhood with loving new owners, a legacy of Michael's gentle care.
His zest for life extended to his culinary adventures at some of his favored eateries, such as Hop Cat, Honest John's, Z's Place, and Starters. With a spunky and lively personality, Michael loved getting to know everyone he met, whether at the bank, his apartment building, or any other place he happened to be. He traversed the city on foot or by bus, a free spirit whose absence will be felt by many.
Michael served his country in the Army, demonstrating the same loyalty and commitment that he would later bring to his personal relationships. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Sheila Ratzel, whose memory he cherished with deep love and respect.
Michael's approach to life was a lesson in resilience and positivity. His ability to bounce back from adversity with a simple "Hey, that's life in the big city" was not just a catchphrase, but a philosophy that he lived by every day. His optimism was infectious, and he never hesitated to lift the spirits of those around him with his boundless energy and encouraging words.
Those who knew Michael will remember him as a man of great character-kind, friendly, and thoughtful. He was the embodiment of a life well-lived, an example of how to navigate the world with grace and goodwill.
Michael Kellar's story is not one of material wealth but of rich, indelible relationships and moments that will forever be treasured by those who were fortunate enough to know him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we take solace in knowing that he has found peace and that his legacy of love and laughter will continue to inspire us all.
A Memorial Gathering to Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Michael Kellar will take place on Saturday, November 22nd at 10am at Central Alliance Church of Detroit, 616 W. Hancock St., Detroit, MI 48201 (Please enter via the Second Avenue door. Parking will be available in the adjacent lot. Lunch and beverages will be served.)
