Michael Dale Kern

Michael Dale Kern, a loving son, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away on February 10, 2024 at his home in Wentworth, SD of health complications. He was born March 10, 1950 in Madison, SD to Dale and Phyllis (Rook) Kern. He grew up in Madison with his two sisters, Chris and Lori. Memories at the lake will always be treasured, especially as the self -proclaimed 'best' water skier. Mike graduated from Madison High School and immediately enrolled in Dakota State, playing football and running track. He excelled athletically, setting many records, while obtaining his elementary education degree. He began teaching at West Lyon Elementary in 1972, and found great fulfillment in coaching golf.
He shared his love and knowledge of the game with any student willing to listen and had a lasting impact on the program. His professional achievements and love for educating and coaching continued until his retirement in 2012. Mike was a devoted father and friend to many. Clayton, John, and Anna were his first priorities and the joy of grandchildren Kim, Karsten, and Kylee were a constant source of happiness. He was an avid golfer and shared the love of the game with everyone he met. His retirement years were spent on The Lakes Golf Course in Wentworth, SD.
Mike is survived by his mother, Phyllis; children, Clayton (Stacy) Kern, John Kern, and Anna Kern; grandchildren, Kim, Karsten, and Kylee Kern; sisters, Chris (Dave) Hicks, Lori Kern (Robert Wight); as well as many uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Dale Kern. Celebration of Mike's life will be on Thursday, February 15th at 10:30 am, at Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison, SD. Burial will be at Rosehill Cemetary in Wentworth immediately following. Let us remember the moments we shared with Mike and celebrate his life for as long as we live. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. Blessed be his memory.
