Michael H. Kernodle, II, age 80, of Rutherfordton, NC, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Mike was a native of Alamance County, NC, a son of the late JD Kernodle and the late Sadie Virginia Kernodle. Mike was a member of Rutherfordton Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon and where he was ordained an elder. He currently attended First Baptist Church Rutherfordton where he taught Sunday school for many years.
Mike was a Court Counselor for the NC Department of Juvenile Justice for more than 30 years, for which he was awarded The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the NC governor's highest honor. Mike has coached the Rutherford County Swim Team since 2011 and recently retired after 40 years of coaching the R-S Central High School Swim Team.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Laci Nicole Gail Chapman.
Left to cherish Mike's memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Susan Kernodle of Rutherfordton, three children: Anne Michelle Kernodle Goodman (Steve) of Thomasville, David Landon Kernodle of Charlotte, and Misty Kidwell Chapman (Phillip) of Rutherfordton; one brother, Bruce Hardin Kernodle (Kaye) of Ruidoso, NM; two grandchildren, Katherine Kelly Goodman, and Sadie Landon Kernodle, and one granddaughter on the way, Paisley Elaine Chapman. He will also be remembered by numerous foster children.
Visitation will be 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Thursday, May 8, 2025, at First Baptist Church Rutherfordton, 246 North Main St., in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rutherford County Swim Team, 1064 S. Mountain Rd. Bostic, NC 28018.
