Michael John Kinsella (1957–2025)
Michael "Mike" Kinsella, beloved brother, athlete, businessman, and friend, passed away on May 23, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 68.
A legend in Salt Lake City and a former University of Utah football standout, Mike was perhaps best known as the owner and heart behind The Leprechaun Inn, a beloved Murray establishment he ran for 40 years. Known affectionately as "The Lep," the bar and restaurant became a local institution under Mike's stewardship, famous for its welcoming spirit, great food, lively karaoke nights, and especially its unforgettable St. Patrick's Day celebrations-each one masterfully orchestrated by Mike himself.
Mike was born in San Rafael, California, one of five children to Don and Virginia Kinsella. Gifted with natural athletic talent, he made his mark early as a standout football player at San Rafael High School and the College of Marin. In 1977, he was recruited to play defensive end for the University of Utah, where he quickly earned a reputation for his tenacity and skill on the field. Nicknamed "Snake" for his uncanny ability to penetrate the offensive line against much larger opponents, Mike was honored as an outstanding defensive player during his time with the Utes.
After graduating from the University of Utah, Mike planted roots in the Salt Lake community, purchasing The Leprechaun Inn and turning it into far more than just a bar-it became a gathering place for friends, families, and sports fans alike.
Mike's zest for life extended well beyond the walls of his pub. A passionate athlete throughout his life, he played rugby and golf, competed in triathlons, and was an avid cyclist who took on grueling double-century races and legendary Tour de France climbs. He traveled widely, diving in the waters of Fiji and Mexico, cycling through Spain and France, and returning often to Italy, where he had close family ties. His home in the Avenues was a vibrant reflection of his adventures, filled with Italian ceramics and artwork collected on his travels as well as his beautiful large scale photographs.
Mike will be remembered for his generosity, his big heart, and his unmistakable, boisterous laugh. He brought people together, lifted spirits, and lived with a joy that was contagious.
He is survived by his siblings Kevin, Pat, and Don, his sister-in-law Tracy, his brother-in-law Roberto, his niece Sacha and by a wide circle of friends and patrons who became like family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Don and Virginia, and his sister Karen, whose memory he carried with him.
Mike's impact on his community and the many lives he touched will not be forgotten.
A celebration of Mike's life will be announced at a later date.
