Michael John Mack, known affectionately by many as Mike, passed away peacefully on October 26, 2023, in Columbus, Ohio. He was surrounded by his family as he passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus. Born on December 29, 1948, in Middletown, Ohio, he lived a life filled with love, faith, and laughter.
Mike was a beloved family man, survived by his devoted wife, Phylis Mack, and their beautiful family. His sons Terence White, Michael A. Mack, Scott (Jennifer) Mack, Vaughn (Angelique) Newsom, Jha'mee (Kristen) Elliott, and his daughters Shelia White-Newman, Twana (John) Young, and Kayla Mack, will remember their father and the great love he had for faith and family. Mike was a papal to a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a dear brother to Janet Mack, Shanelle (Dorian) Astwood, and Donald (Tina) Mack. He was preceded in death by his father Alfred Mack, his mother Mary Ellen (Ransom) Mack, and brother Tommy Mack.
Mike was a proud patriot. Following his service in the Vietnam War, he continued his dedication to his country by joining the Air Force Reserves. His spirit of service extended beyond his military career, as he always sought to make a positive impact on his community and those around him.
Mike's enthusiasm for life and his laughter was infectious. He was a passionate supporter of the Ohio State Buckeyes, always ready to cheer them on and celebrate their victories with his signature dance. His love for family gatherings was unmatched, often hosting barbecues where he would serve his legendary brisket to the delight of family and friends. He was a lover of music, often found strumming his guitar and reminiscing about his time playing bass guitar in the Phenomenal Chataguas. His prized possession was his old Mazda Miata that he lovingly restored to look like the coolest car on the block. He enjoyed driving the Miata with the top down.
Above all, Mike was a man of deep faith. He found joy in studying scripture and praying with his wife. His relationship with God was a source of strength and comfort, which he often shared with those around him. His faith was a beacon that guided him throughout his life and provided solace during difficult times.
Mike was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. His faith-filled life was an inspiration to all who knew him. He had an incredible sense of humor that could light up any room and his laughter will continue to echo in our hearts. His legacy will live on in the many lives he touched.
As the great Maya Angelou once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Mike made everyone around him feel loved and cherished, and that is how he will be remembered.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, from 11AM-1PM, with the service to immediately follow at Thorn Black Funeral Home in Cambridge.
Mike's life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and laughter. His memory will be cherished, and his spirit will live on in the hearts of his loved ones. May he rest in peace.
