Michael John Makis

Michael John Makis, known affectionately as Mike to his friends and family, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, in Greer, South Carolina, at 82. Born on January 18, 1943, in East Chicago, Indiana, Mike was a man of integrity, warmth, and unwavering passion, whose presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.

Mike's journey began as the beloved son of the late John and Mollie Makis, and his early years in Indiana laid the foundation for a life characterized by love, hard work, and dedication. He pursued higher education at Valparaiso University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business, a degree that would serve him well throughout his illustrious career.

Professionally, Mike was a respected figure in the real estate community, where he served as President of Property Management at MGR Realty for several decades. His intelligence and business acumen were matched only by his genuine care for his colleagues and clients, making him a trusted leader and a mentor to many.

Mike's personal life was filled with joy and love, particularly through his cherished family. He is survived by his devoted spouse, Jill Makis, and their two sons, Mathew (Lisa) Makis and Jason (Courtney) Makis. His legacy continues through his adored grandchildren, Jada and CJ, who will forever hold dear the memories of their grandfather's loving guidance and support. Mike also leaves behind his sister-in-law, Kathy Franke, brother-in-law, Jeff (Mary) Franke, sister Geri  (Ron) Hill, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom felt the warmth of his generous spirit.

An avid sports enthusiast, Mike's passion for the Los Angeles Angels and Clemson teams was well-known and infectious. His love for sports was paralleled by his affection for his Samoyeds, especially his best friend Ollie, and his fondly remembered Lobo. These loyal companions brought immense joy and comfort to Mike throughout his life.

Those who knew Mike would describe him as a loving husband, father, and grandfather, an intelligent businessman, and a passionate individual who lived life to the fullest. His ability to connect with people on a personal level, his unwavering support for his loved ones, and his zest for life will be deeply missed by all.

Mike's life was a testament to the power of love, the importance of family, and the impact one person can have on the world around them. As we bid farewell to a man of such remarkable character, we take solace in the countless memories and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.
