A LIFE THAT WAS LIVED TO THE FULLEST
MICHAEL A. MATHEWS
November 8, 1942-October 2, 2024
Michael was unforgettable. He was charming, funny, kind, a world traveler and had a huge heart. His smile lit up a room. He cared tremendously about people and helped whenever he could. Michael felt things deeply and just wanted everyone to be happy.
Michael was a beloved partner to Joseph Seiver, together for 33 years. He was a nephew, cousin and dear friend to so many people. He will be greatly missed by all.
Michael was born in Detroit, Michigan to Gregory and Frances Mathews. The family moved to Southern California, the Hollywood Riviera – a beautiful neighborhood hugging the Pacific Ocean and second home to many movie stars in 1960. A perfect to beginning to a fabulous career.
Michael attended South High School in Torrance and later CalState Long Beach. He began his career at Mattel but soon got the fashion bug and began working at Buffums, followed by Bullock's, The Broadway, Neiman Marcus, and Hermes, finally moving to Palm Springs where he became the Sponsorship and Community Relations Director at Palm Springs Life Magazine. He adored working for the magazine and being involved in all the events that were part of the magazine's life. Capitalizing on his love of fashion, he is known as part of the team that produced yearly the highly successful Fashion Week El Paseo. It's become the largest fashion event in the West and Michael's greatest career accomplishment. He knew how to throw a great party! Michael was an excellent colleague and friend to those worked alongside him.
Always curious about the world and other people, he and Joseph traveled the globe. Being of Greek descent, the many trips to Greece were particularly significant to Michael connecting him to his faith and culture.
He would be the first to tell you that dogs truly are our best friends. An animal lover, Michael and Joseph's home was a sanctuary for many dogs over the years with Athena and Socrates currently holding court.
Michael brought joy and happiness wherever life took him. Always the fashionista, no doubt he will be the best dressed angel.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents, and younger brother Paul. He is survived by his partner, Joseph Seiver, his maternal aunt Helen Takis and a host of cousins that love him dearly.
