Michael Angel Matias, 64, of Pleasant Valley, passed away on October 9, 2025, in the comfort of his home with his family by his side.
Born on May 8, 1961 in the Bronx, he was the son of Felipe Matias and Julia Hernendez-Matias.
Michael enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing, boating, and riding a Harley Davidson. He had a favorite past time for every season. He also loved salsa music, conga drums and dancing. He loved going on vacation, especially visiting his family in Puerto Rico. Above all else, he cherished spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp from 1980 to 1982.
Michael worked as a New York City Corrections officer for many years on Rikers Island before he retired.
Michael is survived by his daughter Julie Matias; step-children Joseph Muriel, Jonathan Muriel, and Jillian Muriel; his cousin Carmen Leiba; brother Fernando Hernendez, nephew Phillip Michael Matias and 12 grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Damarias Matias.
He is also survived by the mother of his children Julie Muriel.
He was predeceased by his father Felipe Matias, his mother Julia Hernandez Matias, and his brother Phillip Matias.
In keeping with Michael's wishes, cremation has taken place.
Calling hours will be held from 1-3pm on October 18, 2025 at Sweet's Funeral Home, 4365 Albany Post Road, Hyde Park, NY. A memorial service with military honors will take place at 2:30 during the calling hours.
