Michael Patrick McCormick was gently called home by the Lord on August 26, 2024, at the age of 85, in the comforting presence of family in
Memphis, Tennessee. Born on the serene day of June 3, 1939, on Governors Island, New York, he was a devout servant of God, whose life was a testament to the virtues of humility, gratitude, and respect for the divine creation that surrounded him.
His father was a West Point graduate and a Colonel in the army, landing Mike the title of "Military Brat". He traveled with his family all over the world, and had many houses along the way. Some of his favorite places being Guatemala, where he learned the beauty of the Latin language, and Carmel, California reveling in life on the coast.
Nurtured in faith from a young age, Michael's educational journey at St. Mary's University deepened his commitment to the teachings of Christ, guiding him to live a life of service and charity. He was a pillar of St. Louis Catholic Church, and although often late, he was steadfast in his faith.
Michael's spiritual grace was evident not only within the hallowed walls of the church but also in his civic engagement as a member of the Rotary Club, President of the St. Louis Men's club, sports marketing for the Liberty Bowl and Racquet Club of Memphis, and his unwavering support for the Memphis Tigers. His love for his community was an extension of his love for God's creation, celebrating every moment of fellowship as a cherished gift.
He was the epitome of a family man, a beacon of light to his wife Paula Smith McCormick, a guiding force to his children Michael, Michelle McCormick Spilger (Jon), Shane (Anise), and Todd McCormick, and a gentle teacher of faith to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lovingly referred to as Mac his legacy of love and faithfulness will live on through Kayleigh Diaz (Kevin), Huston, Tristen, Jack Spilger, Molly, Trae, Jake, Drew, Victoria, Alyssa, and Zoe McCormick, and great-grandchildren Dustin, Presley, and Luke Michael Diaz.
The heavenly choir welcomed Michael into the eternal embrace of his Creator, where he was joyfully greeted by his parents, Aloysius Elliot McCormick and Madeline Gerrs, and his brother Robert McCormick. He leaves behind a family on earth who mirror the light of his spirit: his beloved wife, his cherished children, his sister-in-law Marguerite McCormick, his sister Maureen Ekelund (Ken), and his brother Mark McCormick (Sharon).
Michael walked the earth with the gentle humility of the saints, his every act a silent prayer of gratitude. He found solace in the simplicity of nature, the laughter of children, and the companionship of his dogs. His life was a living psalm, an ode to the Creator, reflecting the beauty and compassion of the Almighty in every selfless deed and word of kindness.
The faithful are called to gather in reverence and celebrate the ascension of Michael's soul at St. Louis Catholic Church, with visitation beginning at 12:00 pm, followed by the sacred rites of the Mass of Christian Burial at 1:30 pm., Thursday August 29. Michael's earthly vessel will be entrusted to the sanctified grounds of Memorial Park, in the blessed hope of everlasting life.
In Michael Patrick "Mac" McCormick, we witnessed the embodiment of divine love and grace. As we honor his memory, let us continue to nurture the seeds of faith, humility, and respect he so tenderly sowed in the gardens of our hearts.
