Michael J. McDevitt

Michael J. McDevitt, of Quincy originally from Dorchester, died on April 19, 2025 surrounded by his family, he was 68. The beloved husband of 30 years to Karen (O’Shea) McDevitt. Devoted father to his three sons, Michael Patrick McDevitt of Chicago, Ill, Daniel James McDevitt and Justin Joseph McDevitt both of Quincy. Son of the late Joseph J. McDevitt and Esther (Rowan) McDevitt. Cherished brother of Robert McDevitt and his wife Susan of Wolfboro, NH, Barbara Colucci and her companion Paul Schiavone of Braintree and the late James McDevitt and his late wife Tami Lamy. Son in law of William A. O’Shea, Sr., and Geraldine O’Shea of Quincy. Brother in law of Noreen O’Shea and her partner Nancy Seretta of Marblehead, William A. O’Shea, Jr. and his wife Gail of Wilmington,Susan O’Shea and her husband James of West Roxbury and Julia Guia and her husband Alex of Quincy. Michael is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, many cousins and friends.

Born and raised in the Savin Hill section of Dorchester, Michael attended St. William’s Grammar School and Boston College High School. After graduating from high school, Michael went to work for the railroad. He worked as a car inspector for Amtrak while also serving as the vice president of the Transport Workers Union Local 2054. He was recognized by Amtrak for his role in starting an Employee Assistance Program for railroad workers and was recognized and honored at a congressional ceremony in Washington, D.C. by Congressman Joe Moakley. Michael always had a love for politics, serving on and helping lead notable local campaigns. He was also a true man for others, and his interests and drive led him to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer. While still working full-time for Amtrak, Michael put himself through school, taking courses at night at Northeastern University and UMass Boston, eventually earning a B.A. in history. He was accepted to Suffolk University Law School, where he attended night courses on a full-time basis while continuing to work for the railroad during the day. His hard work paid off, and he was recognized with the American Jurisprudence Award and selected for the school’s Law Review. After he graduated with honors, Michael began his law career representing the very same union he came from as well as other local unions in Massachusetts. A year later, he married Karen after the two met in Savin Hill, where she also grew up. They were married for 30 years. As he raised his family in Quincy, Michael continued to stay active in local politics and campaigns in Boston. Eventually, Michael decided to take a break from the law and worked as a government affairs liaison for energy companies Veolia North America and Vicinity Energy until he retired in 2021. An easy conversationalist with a wry sense of humor, Michael never forgot where he came from and was selfless in his dedication to his family and friends. He truly loved and treasured his family, his many friendships and the family’s array of pets. He will be greatly missed by all.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to greet the family during the visiting hours on Tuesday,April 29th from 3-7 PM in the Keohane Funeral Home, 785 Hancock St., QUINCY.
